Contact seller5-star sellerA Rare Report Showing the Transition of English Penology from Transportation to Incarceration (And Rehabilitation) Jebb, Joshua [Colonel] [1792-1863]. Report on the Discipline of the Convict Prisons and Operation of the Act 16 & 17 Vict. Cap. 99. By Which Penal Servitude Was Substituted for Transportation. 1854-1855. Presented t…o Both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty. London: Printed by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, For Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1856. vii, [1], 363, [3] pp. 9 folding plates. Octavo (9-1/2" x 6; 24.1 x 15.2 cm). Printed publisher wrappers. Light rubbing and a few minor stains to covers, moderate rubbing to extremities with a few chips to edges of wrappers, spine abraded at ends. Moderate toning to interior, creases, edgewear and minor tears to plates. A good copy. $350. * Only edition. Jebb, a colonel of the Royal Engineers, was the Surveyor-General of prisons. A reformer, he designed several prisons that aimed to promote rehabilitation and the physical well-being of its inmates. His report demonstrates the superiority of the reformed prison system to transportation, which he dismisses as a waste of social and economic resources. The first plate is a tabular description of operating expenses of 10 English prisons. The others, numbered 1 to 8, are lithographed architectural plans of Chatham Prison. This is a rare title. OCLC locates 8 copies, 1 in North America (Harvard Law School). Library Hub adds 2 more copies in Great Britain (Cambridge, University of Aberdeen). Another copy located at the British Library.
