Boston as an able seaman. However, he may have been the captain's steward. He was obviously better educated than the average British seaman. His diary is replete with comments that show ".insatiable curiosity, wit, boundless good humour, and a well-furnished mind." (jacket blurb). A very good copy. There is a short gift inscription on the front, blank endpaper. The jacket has been price-clipped, and has a noticeably faded spine. Elsewhere, there is light soiling. The jacket is protected with a Brodart cover.
