Die Hauptmann-Forschung hat wohl den Bruch in Stil und Thematik Gerhart Hauptmanns festgestellt, aber nie eine plausible Erklärung dafür gefunden. Der Dichter selbst hat sich wie kaum ein anderer einer Deutung seiner Werke in den Weg gestellt. Da die Autorin davon ausgeht, daß alle Werke von Carl und Gerhart Hauptmann autobiographisch zu verstehen sind, drängte sich eine psychoanalytische Betrachtungsweise von Leben und Werk der Brüder Hauptmann auf. Die vielen Gemeinsamkeiten in den Werken der beiden können nicht als Entlehnungen erklärt werden, sondern dieselbe Problematik muß ähnliche Lösungen bedingt haben. Probleme der frühen Jugend, die neurotische Symptome zur Folge hatten, haben die beiden Dichter geprägt. Viele Rätsel der Hauptmann-Forschung können so gelöst werden, und das genaue Studium der Symbole wirft ein neues Licht auf manche Ungereimtheiten, wie zum Beispiel Gerharts Einstellung zum Nationalsozialismus. Das letzte Geheimnis ist wohl die erste psychoanalytische Studie über Schriftsteller-Brüder. Sie zeigt, wie fruchtbar diese Methode gerade für die Deutung literarischer Werke sein kann.
