Il barone di Blonay (Füllinsdorf, 1869-Biskra, Algeria, 1937) fu egittologo e indologo dilettante (giunse a coprire la cattedra di indologia dell'Università di Neuchatel, ed il presente discorso fu proprio la lezione inaugurale del suo insegnamento) e, soprattutto, amico di Pierre de Coubertin, membro-fondatore e poi presidente del Comité olympique suisse. L'un des plus proches collaborateurs et des plus intimes confidents de Pierre de Coubertin; leur correspondance est d'une importance exceptionnelle. B. fut président du CIO par intérim de 1914 à 1919 et participa dès 1921 aux travaux de la commission exécutive dont il assura la vice-présidence à partir de 1925.
