Carroll A Wilson (1887-1947) was a prominent attorney and business executive, who also become recognized as a bibliographer, author and book collector This set, published by his wife shortly after his death, collects much of his scholarship on 13 British and American authors of the 19th century, as well as a compedium of quotations he collected over the years It has become a valuable resource for 19th century literary research This set is in dark blue cloth with gilt titles on the spines Moderate water staining at the top of the front cover of Vol II, but otherwise only the slightest bumping at spine ends The set is No 165 of an edition limited to 375 copies Both volumes have the personal bookplate of the noted collector Frederic R Kirkland on the front pastedown And affixed to the rear pastedown of Vol I, is Kirkland's 1957 purchase receipt from Maurice Inman Inc Rare Books for the set (for $50! Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Important anthology of poetry by black poets, assembled when students at the University of Michigan complained because none of the anthologies used in introductory poetry courses included black poets. Some of the poets anthologized here for the first time, became very famous over the course of time. The book's pages are lightly toned but clean without marks, creases, stains, wrinkles, foxing or tears. There is an ink smudge on the inside front cover and another on the inside back cover. Very little soiling to outer covers but there is light rubbing. Very light wear to edges of covers and spine. A very presentable copy. (Note: Photos may show a flash reflection.) PayPal always welcome. We pack all our books with care and ship in cardboard boxes. Shipment outside of the United States may require extra funds. Additional photos emailed upon request.…

Fine condition. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are clean and unmarked. . 1950. First Edition. Limited to 375 numbered sets, this being #374. John Carter's review in the TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT (copy of review laid-in) states, "the number of previously unrecorded rarities, unique pieces, precious 'association' copies. would make many a millionaire collector green with envy. there is set out here for the first time a mass of bio-bibliographical information on Alcott, Emerson, Hawthorne, Holmes, Irving, Longfellow, Lowell, Melville, Poe, Thoreau, and Whittier such as future students and collectors of any of these authors will neglect at their peril. (the book) provides a series of absolutely indispensable supplements to the bibliographies of the authors included in it." Rounding out the 13 virtually complete author collections described here are first and important editions by Hardy and Trollope. Excellent annotations. The 109 page bibliography of familiar quotations/songs/poems in their first printed appearance is one of only a few references that exist on that subject. Preface by the collector's wife Jean C.S. Wilson. Includes a reproduction of Carroll Atwood Wilson's bookplate. Top edges gilt. Uniformly bound in the original gilt-stamped dark blue cloth. Oversize Hardcover.
