Theo's son, Ir Dr Vincent Willem van Gogh (1890-1978), later expanded the collection somewhat. It is no longer possible to find out exactly which prints were added by him to the original group. In 1986 the museum's collection was enlarged with a gift of 35 prints by the Tokyo Shimbun in Japan, whereby Hiroshige's Tokaido series of 1855, of which 20 prints were already in the museum's possession, could be completed. This catalogue is a completely revised and extended edition of the 1978 catalogue Japanese Prints collected by Vincent van Gogh. He also spent much time at Barbizon, near the Fontainebleau Forest, where he painted some of his most famous works. One of his teachers and friends in Paris was Francois Souchon and he admired the painter Théodore Rousseau. Diaz exhibited at many 'Paris Salons' and the World Expo of 1855, and became 'Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur' in 1851; Auguste Renoir once said ''My hero was Diaz.''.
