In blue printed wraps with flaps. Colophon on first page, with small indistinguishable device: 'THE FIRST BOOKLET / set, printed and published by the / Jan…us Press at Bickley in Kent / 1933'. Title-page: 'AN IRISH IDYLL / CHARLES DUFF / [crude vignette of shamrock] / Janus Press'. Information on reverse of title includes: 'An Irish Idyll was first used by / The British Broadcasting Corporation / on the 12th. Of July MCMXXXIII'. Internally in good condition, on lightly-aged laid paper, with slightly rusty staples, in worn wraps. An unremarkable piece of printing in a sans serif font, presumably by Duff himself, who would shortly throw up his job at the Foreign Office, and abandon his wife and four children. There is no record of any other item by this imprint. A one-act play for three characters (Mr O'Toole, Widow O'Flaherty, Widow Malone), of between 'twenty and thirty minutes' duration, set in 'the parlour of the house of the Widow O'Flaherty, in a village of County Cork, Ireland': 'The dialogue demands a rich Irish brogue of all the speakers'.

Contact seller5-star sellerOriginal Wrappers. Condition: Fine binding. First Edition. Octavo. [2], 71, [3] pp., illus. Limited edition, one of 120 numbered copies. Sewn longstitch with three different colors of thread into St. Armand Papeterie's Canal paper with small printed embellishment on front cover. Letterpress printed in black and brick red on Cana…letto paper. Strikingly illustrated with photographs, ink knife images, and collages, all of which are digitally printed, many are folding. In card slipcase with printed paper label on the spine. A fine copy. A remarkable collection, Luck's lyrics are by turns searching, defiant, and resigned, but always personal and human "I thought when I threw away the bus transfers / I used again and again / I would lose this turbulence / in the coming and going / from here to there." A wonderful book of poetry, wonderfully illustrated by Luck; and here beautifully designed and printed in the inimitable fashion of the Janus Press. And few Janus Press books are issued without some novel playfulness or unique element to their structure. Here, a three-leaf section with short "grook" poems, one on top and one on the bottom of each page that has a horizontal cut across the middle so the top and bottom of each leaf turn independently, allowing the reader to navigate these several poems in a less prescriptive manner.

Contact seller5-star sellerOriginal Wrappers. Condition: Fine binding. First Edition. Accordion. 9-1/2" x 4-3/4" closed. [12] pp. Limited edition, one of 100 copies. Signed by Johankneckt, Van Vliet, and Miller-Brown at the colophon. As issued, in stiff wrappers of Barcham Green India Office illustrated with an image of Bach's last known musical score, th…e unfinished Fugue of The Art of the Fugue. The accordion style structure, designed by Van Vliet folds into 12 unnumbered pages that read parallel to the folds, recto and verso. All housed in a handmade paper slipcase with "fugal" printed on the spine. A fine copy. A wonderful collaboration between Susan Johanknecht, Claire Van Vliet, and Andrew Miller-Brown. Inspired by Bach Fugues, Johanknecht's poem is printed on the recto of accordion-fold. As Van Vliet and Miller-Brown were puzzling over the project last fall, it became apparent that the lines could be read aloud in any order. This morphed into the accumulating text on the verso. True to the musical definition of a fugue, this presentation of the poem develops through repetition and interweaving. A wonderful homage to the musical form, and to Bach in particular; all the while developing into something that is not merely an homage.

Contact seller4-star sellerCloth. Condition: Very Good binding. 7-5/8" x 7-5/8." [18] pp. Limited edition, number 12 of 175 copies. Signed by McPherson, Van Vliet, and the host of contributing artists. Bound in printed cloth over boards with a removable paper spine allowing the book to be expanded out accordion-style; in publisher's clamshell box. An exce…ptional copy in a very nice clamshell but for some minor staining to the front panel. The front cover recalls a quilt, with printed with squares and diamonds within a solid border; the rear cover is the same design but with different colors. To open the book, one gets the echo of the geometric construction of a quilt but without any predictability. Each leaf is cut out in different and random shapes; and the colors are as variable as the shapes. An innovative structure (a calling card for Van Vliet's Janus Press), this is a delightful and unexpected book that can be leafed through or, if the removable printed spine is pulled out from where it slots into the boards, it can be expanded in accordion fashion. Fine. The Janus Press 1981-1990, p. 23, 42.
