Marcel Janco, pittore, architetto, critic…o d'arte e promotore culturale, è stato uno dei fondatori del Dadaismo, e uno dei principali esponenti del Costruttivismo in Europa orientale.Il debutto di Janco sulla scena artistica avviene negli anni dieci, quando insieme ai poeti Tristan Tzara e Ion Vinea inizia a scrivere per la rivista d'arte Simbolul. Sono gli anni in cui, studente a Zurigo, è uno dei tre o quattro animatori delle celebri serate Dada del Cabaret Voltaire, aperto da Hugo Ball e la futura moglie Emmy Hennings, il 5 febbraio 1916. Le sue prime opere risentono dell'nfluenza dell'Art Nouveau, ma ben presto inizia ad avvicinarsi al Futurismo e all'Espressionismo, prima di creare il contesto visivo e scenotecnico al Dadaismo letterario di Tristan Tzara. Nel 1919 Janco si separa da Tzara fonda con Hans Arp il circolo costruttivista Das Neue Leben.Nel 1921 Janco dopo aver rinunciato ad inserirsi nel nascente movimento Surrealista, torna nella sua città natale in Romania dove resterà per oltre venti anni. Qui diventa con Vinea redattore di Contimporanul, una delle principali riviste dell'avanguardia rumena, dove Janco per la prima volta pubblicò la propria visione di una nuova e migliore pianificazione urbana.Nel al 1941, rifugiatosi in Israele, a causa delle persecuzioni antisemite subite in patria, diventa cittadino israeliano, contribuendo allo sviluppo dell'arte ebre israeliana. Per questo, ricevette il premio Dizengoff ed il premio dello Stato di Israele.Di Janco scrive Michel Seuphor nel catalogo di una mostra del 1961 alla Galleria Schwarz: " L'opera di Janco, dell'epoca Dada, rimane una delle più solide espressioni plastiche di questo movimento. .
