Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First. Mekka is de heilige stad van de islam. Ieder jaar opnieuw vindt de bedevaart daarheen plaats, vijfmaal per dag bidden moslims in de richting van Mekka. Mekka is het hart van de islam. De Leidse geleerde Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje schreef een boek - in het Duits - over Mekka dat als een Nederlandse klassieker wordt beschouwd. Nu, 120 jaar later, verschijnt voor het eerst een Nederlandse editie van Mekka. Toen het boek in 1889 verscheen sloeg het in als een bom. De welhaast mythische faam die Snouck Hurgronje al tijdens zijn leven genoot, is grotendeels gebaseerd op zijn verblijf in 1885 in de heilige en verboden stad, en op zijn beschrijving van de Mekkaanse samenleving, vooral buiten het pelgrimsseizoen. Deze studie van binnenuit over Mekka is de eerste - en ook de laatste keer - geweest, dat de Mekkaanse maatschappij in al haar facetten onderzocht en beschreven is. Mekka is nog steeds een relevant boek. Snouck Hurgronjes idee over onze omgang met de ander, in het bijzonder met de moslim, zijn ook voor onze tijd waardevol en bruikbaar. Snouck Hurgronje is daarbij ook een superieur stilist, die amusant en scherpzinnig weet te vertellen over hoe de Mekkaanse mens zijn leven inricht. Zijn rake observaties geven de lezer het gevoel dat hij zelf door de straten van Mekka wandelt. In de uitgebreide inleiding van Jan Just Witkam wordt verteld, ook voor de eerste maal, hoe Snouck Hurgronje zijn onderzoek in Mekka inrichtte, wat hij in Mekka ondernam, en waarom aan zijn Mekkaanse verblijf een ontijdig einde kwam. Voor deze inleiding wordt voor het eerst uitgebreid gebruikgemaakt van het Snouck Hurgronje-archief dat in 1997 voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek werd geopend.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. FIRST TWO BOOKS ONLY, the first book covers Volume I-II, the second book covers Volume III-IV. Text is unmarked in both volumes; pages are bright, though the page edges are lightly age toned. Bindings are sturdy. The upper corner of the front cover of the first book is bumped, lightly creasing the top corner of the pages at the front of the book as well. The covers of both books show some light wear around the corners. Text is largely in Arabic with a little French sprinkled in at the beginning. International/Priority shipping at cost.
