Book Condition: Very Good; light bumping to head and tail; light soiling to boards. DJ: Good; NOT Price Clipped ($3.00); closed tears; chipping to D…J edges; missing small pieces to spine. Gray cloth boards and spine with bright green lettering on the spine. Clean internals. Inner hinges are sound and not split. 237 pp 8vo. John William De Forest (1826-1906), a native of Connecticut, enjoyed a long career as a prolific writer, mainly of fiction. During the Civil War he was a captain in the 12th Connecticut Volunteers, taking part in the capture of New Orleans, the Port Hudson campaign, and the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia. After the war, he served as a sub-assistant district commissioner for the Freedmen's Bureau in Greenville, South Carolina. This book, published in 1946, is De Forest's vivid description of his experiences at war. It consists of letters to his wife during his service, supplemented by six articles published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine and Galaxy between 1864 and 1868. De Forest intended to compile these pieces into a book but never did. James H. Croushore finally accomplished the task, adding chapter divisions with introductory notes to give form and continuity to the whole. The result is a first-rate personal war narrative - recently named one of the one hundred finest Civil War books by Civil War magazine - more than half of which deals with Louisiana from De Forest's Yankee perspective. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Printing Stated. 407 Pages Indexed. This is a complimentary book from a Santa Fe book shop and this is the fourth volume of a uniform edition of The Works of Witter Bynner, under the general editorship of James Kraft, issued under the auspices of The Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetr…y. Prose Pieces is a collection covering over sixty years of writing. As James Kraft writes in his introduction, "One finds throughout these essays Bynner's special interests: his pleasure in the expression of human character, especially when it shows the minority viewpoint; his commitment to democracy and humor - concepts he considered related; and his affinity for Mexico and China as societies that offered alternative ways of looking at the world." There is an interview with Henry James, written in 1905; a visit with George Meredith; essays on D. H. Lawrence, Edna Millay, Bertha Kalich, Ezra Pound, and Robinson Jeffers; accounts of life in the Southwest and of the Pueblo Indians reminiscences, reviews, and public letters. This collection reveals not only the wide range of Bynner's interests but his warmth, humor, and tolerance. Krupat, Cnthia - Design (illustrator).

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Printing Stated. 275 Pages Indexed. Selected from over 7,000 letters, most of them at the Houghton Library at Harvard, this concluding volume of The Works of Witter Bynner distills the eighty-seven years of Bynner's life (1881-1968). His correspondence describes travels to Mexico, to…China, and to Europe; his life in Boston, New Hampshire, New York, and Santa Fe. There are letters to D. H. Lawrence, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, Carl Sandburg, Marianne Moore, William Carlos Williams, Christopher Isherwood, Amy Lowell, Henry Miller, Carl Van Vechten, and many others. This collection represents the many aspects of a long and varied career spanning the transition from Gilded Age to Nuclear Age. Poet, critic, biographer, playwright, translator from the Chinese, editor, and man of letters, Witter Bynner deserves to be better known to contemporary readers. "He was not," writes James Kraft in his introduction to this volume, "except for a brief period in the late teens and the twenties, a member of our literary establishment-in fact, he later represented a movement away from the mainstream. Krupat, Cnthia - Design (illustrator).
