Silver joined the history department faculty at Notre Dame from 1964 to 1969 thereafter teaching at the University of South Florida until his retirement in 1979. In a bit of Mississippi trivia, William Faulkner used to watch episodes of "Car 54, Where Are You" and occasionally "Bonanza" too at Professor Silver's house on the Ole Miss campus. {MS Shelf #6}.
