Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 7 inches by 10.25 inches. 199, [1] pages. Illustrations (color). Additional Reading. Index. The dust jacket has some wearing around the edges, loss of small portion at the bottom of the spine, as well as some discoloration on the back side. The seven realms explored in this book vary widely. Some encompass remote, challenging terrain; others offer solitude and spectacular vistas accessible by trails or roads. The authors and photographers - bushwhacking on foot, or venturing forth by plane, horseback, canoe, and dugout - discovered a special kinship with nature and a heightened sense of self. The National Geographic Society (NGS), headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations in the world. Founded in 1888, its interests include geography, archaeology, and natural science, the promotion of environmental and historical conservation, and the study of world culture and history. The National Geographic Society's logo is a yellow portrait frameâ"rectangular in shapeâ"which appears on the margins surrounding the front covers of its magazines and as its television channel logo. Through National Geographic Partners (a joint venture with The Walt Disney Company), the Society operates the magazine, TV channels, worldwide events, and other media operations.

M. Suzanne Donovan was the Director of the Strategic Education Research Partnership. James Pellegrino is Liberal Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor and Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a founding Co-director of UIC's interdisciplinary Learning Sciences Research Institute. From 1979-1989 he was Professor of Education and Psychology at the University of California at Santa Barbara. From 1989-2001 he was the Frank W. Mayborn Professor of Cognitive Studies at Vanderbilt University. Pellegrino's research and development interests focus on children's and adult's thinking and learning and the implications of cognitive research and theory for assessment and instructional practice. Pellegrino's unique blend of expertise which combines knowledge of cognitive science, psychometrics, educational technology, instructional practice, and educational policy has led to appointment as head of several National Academy of Science/National Research Council study committees. The Strategic Education Research Partnership (SERP) is a bold, ambitious plan that proposes a revolutionary program of education research and development. Its purpose is to construct a powerful knowledge base, derived from both research and practice, that will support the efforts of teachers, school administrators, colleges of education, and policy officials with the ultimate goal of significantly improving student learning. The proposals in this book have the potential to substantially improve the knowledge base that supports teaching and learning by pursuing answers to questions at the core of teaching practices. It calls for the linking of research and development, including instructional programs, assessment tools, teacher education programs, and materials. Best of all, the book provides a solid framework for a program of research and development that will be genuinely useful to classroom teachers.
