Add to basketTrade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Holt, Rinehart and Winston, September 1960. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Unmarked. Spine straight, tight and uncreased. Foxing to edges and covers. Not from a library. vii + 146 pages. The National Purpose was a highly influential, five-part public debate and essay symposium jointly sponsored by Life magazine and The New York Times that aimed to address a widespread anxiety that post-war America had become overly materialistic, affluent, and complacent, losing its foundational sense of mission in the face of the escalating Cold War. The series emerged at a critical cultural and political juncture the end of the Eisenhower administration and the dawn of the 1960 presidential campaign. Spurred by massive economic growth, intellectual critiques like John Kenneth Galbraith's The Affluent Society, and Soviet advancements like Sputnik, policymakers and journalists feared Americans were prioritizing personal comfort over national survival. The series sought to explicitly redefine the country's collective goals. The symposium featured ten prominent American leaders, intellectuals, and public figures who published long-form essays in the pages of Life and The New York Times. Notable contributors included: Adlai Stevenson: The former Democratic presidential nominee argued that America needed to "extend our vision. to all mankind" rather than retreating into private wealth. David Sarnoff: The head of RCA argued for a aggressive, renewed dedication to democratic traditions specifically tailored to fighting and defeating global Communism. Billy Graham: The famed evangelist diagnosed a "moral and spiritual cancer" in the country, warning that an obsession with personal luxury was robbing citizens of their individual and national character. Walter Lippmann & James Reston: The legendary political commentators argued that the country was stagnant and waiting for a political innovator—asserting that a great nation requires decisive presidential leadership to guide public resolve. Other Authors: The series also featured essays from Archibald MacLeish, John W. Gardner, Clinton Rossiter, John K. Jessup, and defense strategist Albert Wohlstetter. The articles generated enormous public discussion and heavily shaped the rhetoric of the 1960 election, directly influencing John F. Kennedy's "New Frontier" campaign, which focused on sacrifice and national renewal.…

Includes list of abbreviations, further readings and an index. 156 pp. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. The Greeks invented history as a literary genre in the fifth century B.C. The first historians owed much to Homer and adopted his vivid and direct style in narrating historical events. Yet, despite the influence of Homer the birth of history was basically a reaction against mythical accounts of the past. Homer wrote about war and travel in foreign lands, in the distant and mythical past. In contrast, the Greek historians of the fifth century wrote about contemporary or very recent events, where eye witnesses could be interviewed and facts checked. The Greek Historians follows the development of history from Herodotus, via Thucydides, Xenophon and Polybius, until the Hellenistic age. It introduces the individual writers and their topics, yet it also outlines their attitudes to historiography and their criticisms of each other. Such themes as the uses and value of truth and causation are traced, as well as the growing constraints on free speech under Hellenistic monarchs and the Romans. Written in an accessible and captivating manner, with suggestions for further reading, this book serves as a lucid introduction to Greek historians and writing of history.…
