The f…irst English translation of Schlegel's last published work, his 'Philosophie der Geschichte' in which he argues that 'World history is not a progression towards greater rationality, but an attempt to return to spiritual grace and harmony with the divine. Although this work does give great importance to non-Western cultures, Schlegel still sees European Christianity as the turning point of history and the culmination of civilization' [Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy]. Written by Karl Wilhelm Friedrich von Schlegel, a German poet, literary critic, philosopher, philologist, and Indologist considered one of the main figures of Jena Romanticism. Translated with a memoir of the author by James Patrick Bannerman Robertson, Baron Robertson, a Scottish judge and Conservative politician. Previously held in the library of Francis Pierrepont Barnard, an English Professor of Mediaeval Archaeology at the University of Liverpool. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the joints. Hinges just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
