Fine unread condition blue green linen boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by James C. Bradford; Author Dedication; List of Illustrations; Preface; Acknowledgments; Bibliography; Notes on Contributors; Index and About The Naval Institute Press. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. 'The third in a series, this collection of interpretive, biographical essays on the admirals of the new steel navy continues the story of the development of the American naval tradition begun so successfully in Command Under Sail and Captains of the Old Steam Navy. In this new volume the focus is on the years between 1880 and 1930, a period marked by exceptional change in the United States. The U.S. Navy, in particular, underwent a significant transformation as it adapted to new technologies and grew to meet the responsibilities thrust upon it by America's new role as a world power. The essays trace the emergence of the modern U.S. Navy by examining the lives of thirteen naval officers. A varies lot, the names of some, for example, Alfred Thayer Mahan and William T. Sampson, are quite familiar. Others, such as French Ensor Chadwick and Henry T. Mayo, are less well known than they deserve to be. Educators, diplomats, reformers, strategists, and combat leaders, as well as developers and implementors of the new technology, they shaped the character of the navy and set its course into the twentieth century. In emphasizing aspects of their individual careers and personalities that had lasting effects on the evolution of American naval traditions, these essays together provide a useful history of the service and the men who led it. The authors, authorities on the era and the men they write about, offer fresh interpretations of their subjects that, in many cases, focus on previously neglected areas of study. Stretching from the introduction of the first steel ships to the formative years of naval aviation that foreshadowed the end of the battleship era, this book offers readers an entertaining yet informative history that allows amateur and professional alike to better appreciate the U.S. Navy's dramatic period of development and adjustment." - from the inner front jacket flap.
