In it, he argues that the Democratic party has historically been the party of the people, and he urges his audience to support Grover Clev…eland and Allen G. Thurman in the upcoming presidential election. Berret begins his speech by discussing the history of the Democratic party, from its founding by Thomas Jefferson to the present day. He argues that the Democrats have always stood for the principles of democracy, equality, and economic justice. He contrasts the Democrats with the Republicans, who he argues have been the party of big business and the wealthy. Berret then goes on to discuss the issues of the 1888 presidential campaign. He argues that the most important issue is the tariff. He believes that the high tariffs imposed by the Republicans have hurt the American economy and that they should be lowered. He also discusses other issues such as civil service reform and the national debt. Berret concludes his speech by urging his audience to vote for Cleveland and Thurman. He believes that they are the best candidates to lead the country and that they will represent the interests of the American people. Berret resigned his post as Chief Clerk of the Pension Office in order to commence business in the city of Washington, as prosecutor for claims on Mexican Bounty Lands, claims on account of service in the War with Mexico, e…tc. Fees are stated and references given. Berret eventually became Mayor of Washington, DC from 1858-1861, but was briefly imprisoned at Fort Lafayette in New York harbor for failure to take the loyalty oath during the Civil War, and resigned as mayor.
