Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. This book is an English translation of original Odia work, titled Vaidika Dharma-Cetana, Eka Darsanika Vicara by Professor Misra was a Senior Fellow of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research. It resulted from Professor Misra's reading of the Vedas in original. This English translatio…n brings to us one of the rare treatments of the Vedas, where it is presented purely as a discourse of knowledge (as the word 'Veda' ought to imply). The translator hopes to open this discourse to a global audience of students and scholars of the Vedas, beginning with the first question that the Vedic sages tried to tackle, that is the question about the distinctive nature and methods of knowledge. This book draws upon the universal ideas of the Vedic sages, applicable in any part of the universe, and for the whole of the human society. As their truths are independent of any individual's perception, but are in accordance with the nature of perception itself, Vedic mantras are called person-neutral. The Vedas do not recognize any individual's primacy. No one, neither God, nor Creator, nor a great person deputed by Him, has pronounced the Vedas.

Hardcover. Condition: New. In the management of renewable resources, forests have undeniably a vital role and today, as never before, their conservation is an urgency. In view of this dire necessity, the series Man and Forest tries to highlight the relevance of indigenous knowledge of various South Asian tribal communities in th…e sustainable management of forests/local resources — more specially against the growing challenges of economic development vis-a-vis environmental hazards and a rapidly declining resource base. A scientific inquiry into indigenous knowledge is an effort to discover/ rediscover the tribals traditional modes of production and conservation. For them it is the only source to cope with the problems of modernity affecting their lives and precarious environments. Forest Tribes of Orissa: The Dongaria Kondh is the second book in the series of monographs of Man and Forest, and the first focussing on a tribal community today caught in the transition between an autochthonous lifestyle and fragments of modernity. The authors attempt to document the Dongaria's traditional knowledge of their natural environment; how they classify trees, plants, hills, forests, crops, and soils; and how so far they have been managing their forests. Also meticulously delineated, as a backdrop to this study, are the Dongaria's geographical landscape, economy, socio-political organisation, oral traditions, belief cosmos, and other relevant socio-cultural aspects. The present book is, as most of the volumes in the series, the outcome of nearly ten-years research venture involving an interdisciplinary, intercultural team of sociologists, ethnobotanists, social anthropologists and other social scientists.

As a part of Hindu great tradition it has been discussed in the context of Shaiva tradition under Hinduism. Natha cult since its inception, has been highlighting some specific accounts of Yoga as practised in Shaiva tradition. Within the Hindu boundary though it flourished as a great tradition, among local followers it has to interact with the local Hindu traditions as well as specific cultural inputs of caste/agriculture based society. As a result of local impact, although the Natha great tradition at the all India level maintained its basic characteristic features, at the same time it also experienced certain changes through localization process. On the basis of the interaction between Natha great traditions and its little traditions in Odisha, the present work has been anthropologically designed to describe as well as analyze such interactions.
