Unbound. Condition: Fine. A collection of 24 gelatin silver photographs taken by filmmaker and photographer, Jacques Prayer of sex workers in France between 1950 through the 1980s. The images measure between 6" x 9" and 10" x 12" Prayer wrote a letter on the verso of five of the images, dated 1977, to sex rights advocate Margo St. James, who was gifted the collection. St. James and Prayer became friendly after he photographed her and others at the first "Whore's Congress" in Amsterdam in 1975. Of the photographs seen here he writes, "fotos about my 14th July shooting in a prostitute place St. Denis Street that sequence is now edited. It is very kind." He also discusses his next project including a film he hoped would "be a secret for Cannes Festival 1978." Additionally he mentions that he's been invited by Warner-Columbia to attend the Deauville American Film festival. The photographs Prayer has sent St. James span decades and show his interest in documenting the women of the Red Light District of Rue St. Denis in Paris. Women are seen in candids, on the street, seated at bars, soliciting clients, playing cards, and dancing. Prayer captions the versos of each photo with the names of the women, the date, and his copyright information. An interesting look at the denizens of a Parisian red light district through the lens of a French filmmaker.
