El bailarín y la danza es un extenso e intenso retrato de un artista poseído por el genio de la vitalidad y poseedor de un sorprendente conocimiento teórico sobre el sinuoso recorrido de la coreografía durante el siglo XX. En esta apasionante conversación no sólo describe y analiza en detalle sus propias obras, sino que además nos revela los entresijos de sus colaboraciones con creadores como John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Morris Graves, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Bruce Nauman o Robert Morris.Merce Cunningham (Centralia, Washington, 1919) se formó como bailarín en la mítica compañía de Martha Graham, donde actuó como solista entre 1939 y 1945. Ese año asombró al público con la presentación de Mysterious Adventure, obra que da inicio a su fulgurante trayectoria independiente y a una colaboración de casi cinco décadas con el compositor vanguardista John Cage. Su concepción del ballet como ejercicio basado en la pureza abstracta del movimiento y carente, por tanto, de referencias narrativas o emocionales se materializa en The Seasons (1947) y se desarrolla, con todo tipo de variantes, en las doscientas piezas que ha creado desde entonces. Entre ellas podríamos destacar (arbitrariamente) Suite by Chance (1952), primera coreografía sostenida de forma «azarosa» sobre una composición electrónica, o Un jour ou deux (1973), montaje para el ballet de la Ópera de París con decorados de Jasper Johns. Su última obra, eyeSpace, fue estrenada en 2006. Merce Cunningham ha recibido todos los premios imaginables.
