Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Jacob Aue Sobol's With and Without You is a deeply personal photobook that traces the photographer's emotional journey through love, loss, and self-discovery. Shot over several years in Bangkok, Copenhagen, and Tokyo, the book weaves together intense black-and-white images that explore…themes of intimacy, isolation, and connection. Sobol's raw, grainy aesthetic and instinctive style create a visual diary that is both poetic and visceral. With and Without You stands as a powerful meditation on relationships and the transient nature of human experience, blending documentary and art photography in a uniquely expressive form. Add to basketBook dummy, inscribed by Sobol in black ink on first page with a printed title label; (300 x 210 mm, 11¾ x 8¼ in); 51 black & white photographs printed in inkjet (incl. covers), leperello-bound with tape, occasionally loosened, loose in photo-illustrated wrappers, poster for 'Book Dummies' exhibition curated by Victor Sira at…the International Center of Photography, New York (25 October - 27 November 2008). laid in, near-fine. This book dummy is inscribed to a collector: 'First dummy of Tokyo / NY June 19th 2007 / [signed] Jacob Aue Sobol / 1/5'. The series was published the following year as I, Tokyo (2008). Jacob Aue Sobol was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1976. His photographs focus on the universality of human emotion and the search for love within often harsh surroundings. He joined Magnum Photos as an associate in 2007 and became a full member in 2012. Besides his native Denmark, Aue Sobol has settled for long periods in Canada, Greenland, Guatemala, Japan, Thailand, and Russia. In 2006, he moved to Tokyo and spent eighteen months making photographs that explore his loneliness and need for connections in the confined reality of the Japanese capital. 'Initially I felt invisible. Each day I would walk the streets without anyone making eye-contact with me. Everyone seemed to be heading somewhere â" it was as if they had no need of communication. Most mornings I would take the Chuo-line from Nakano to Shinjuku, and even though the train would be packed with salary-men and school girls in uniform, I rarely heard a word being spoken. And so I began taking my pocket camera out with me on the streets and in the parks. Rather than focusing on the impressively tall buildings and the eternal swarm of people, I began searching for the narrow paths and the individual human presence in a city that felt both attractive and repulsive at the same time.'.

First edition, first printing. Signed by Anders Petersen and Jacob Aue Sobol! New, mint unread; only opened once for the signatures. Clothbound hardback. 166 x 247 mm.… 144 pages. 90 tritone plates. Photos by Anders Petersen and Jacob Aue Sobol. Introduction by Gerry Badger. Wonderful photobook! Signed by both artists! Petersen is famous for his photobooks like Cafe Lehmitz, which is one of the most famous photobook titles ever published (Martin Parr, The Photobook, page 230/231. The Open Book, The Hasselblad Center, page 318. 802 photobooks of the M. + M. Auer Collection, page 566). Jacob Aue Sobol is famous for "Sabine". "Born in Stockholm in 1944, Anders Petersen is undoutedly one of the world`s most important photographers of the last 40 years. In 1978 he published Café Lehmitz, which established his international reputation and is now recognised as one of the classic photobooks of the 20th century. In 2003 he was appointed Professor of Photography at the University of Göteborg. He regularly runs workshops and holds exhibitions throughout Europe, Asia and the USA and has received numerous grants and awards since the 1970s. These include the "Photographer of the Year" award in France and the "Erich Salomon Award" in Germany. He has also been shortlisted for the "Deutsche Börse" award run by The Photographers Gallery, London. "These pictures are from every time and from every place. When I look at my contact sheets I often lose myself in memories that I share with the people I photographed. Throughout the years these pictures have become my private diary, with a taste and a language of its own. A small world inhabited by my very own, very real people. For me it is interesting to find that condensed and tender moment. It`s an entry into what I`m doing today; discovering desires and memories from the past and mixing them with what I encounter in the present. It`s all about identifying and presence." (Anders Petersen) "Jacob Aue Sobol is a member of Magnum Photos. He is represented by Yossi Milo Gallery, New York; the Rita Castelotte Gallery, Madrid; and RTR Gallery, Paris. A winner of the "European Publishers Award For Photography" and of a "World Press Photo Award", he gained international recognition after the publication of his book Sabine which was the result of a three year period spent in a small settlement on the East Coast of Greenland. He lived there with his Greenlandic girlfriend, Sabine, and her family, living the life of a fisherman and hunter but also taking photographs. In Spring 2006 he moved to Tokyo, staying there 18 months before returning to Copenhagen, where he now lives and works. He is currently working on the project Arrivals and Departures ? a journey from Moscow to Beijing - in co-operation with Leica Camera." (from the publisher) Anders Petersen is noted for his intimate and personal documentary-style black-and-white photographs. Petersen has exhibited internationally and won numerous prizes during his career. His first project, Café Lehmitz, was started soon after he had completed his studies with Christer Strömholm`s School of Photography in Sweden in the late 1960s. Photographing the late-night regulars (prostitutes, transvestites, drunks, lovers, drug addicts) of Café Lehmitz, a bar in Hamburg, the project was published in 1978 and has since become a seminal book in the history of European photography. One of the photos from this series was later used as the cover art for Tom Waits` 1985 album Rain Dogs. In 1970, he co-founded SAFTRA, the Stockholm group of photographers, with Kenneth Gustavsson. At the same time, he taught at Christer Stromholm`s school and has been director of the Göteborg School of Photography and Film. In the mid-1980s Petersen focused his attention on people in locked institutions: prisons, a nursing home and a mental hospital. Since t.
