"Nearly every major river in the world is now regulated by dams or diversions, yet ecological manifestations of river regulation remain undocumented and management alternatives are not available. This book is the first comprehensive review of existing knowledge on the ecology of stream regulation. The text focuses specifically on downstream effects, emphasizing the ecological and biological impact of dams. .The book begins with a state-of-the-art description of the natural ecosystem by K.W. Cummins. Subsequent articles, written by scientists with outstanding research experience in their subject areas, examine all aspects of the limnology of regulated streams. The modifications of physical, chemical, and hydrological gradients in streams below impoundments are examined as causative agents for profound changes in indigenous biotic components, including phytobenthos, zoobenthos, and fishes. .The editors conclude that regulated streams are now the most prevalent lotic environments on earth. The Ecology of Regulated Streams provides a foundation for pure and applied study of these altered ecosystems." .

Softcover. Condition: Fine. First edition. Association copy: Former United States Forest Service Chief Jack Ward Thomas's contributor's copy, with his ownership signature, date, and place ("Florence, MT") on the first blank. A nice association between two FS Chiefs, as Dombeck served as chief immediately after Thomas. Thomas contributes a short "focus essay" entitled "Public Lands: An American Birthright" on pages 21-23. He is also mentioned on at least six other pages in the book, including on page one, where he is the subject of the opening anecdote related to "doe wars" in Texas and public attention to natural resource issues. He is thanked in the acknowledgments. As for the authors: Christopher A. Wood is a VP for conservation programs for Trout Unlimited.Michael P. Dombeck was the 14th Chief of the Forest Service and previous to that director of the Bureau of Land Management. He is the only person to have led the nation's two largest public land management agencies. Dombeck hasbeen awarded the Ansel Adams Award, the Aldo Leopold Restoration Award (one can hear a clear echo of Leopold in his use of "land ethic" in the inscription), and Conservation Hero of the Year by the Wilderness Society, among many others (also speaking of Leopold, he is a member of the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame). A book about the history, practice, and ethics of public land management in the US, co-written by the authors in a unified style. Interspersed are also wide-ranging short "focus essays" from influential environmentalists and public lands thinkers, including Jack Ward Thomas (former Forest Service Chief), Patricia Nelson Limerick (renown environmental historian), Tim Palmer, Rick Bass, Bruce Babbitt (former Secretary of the Interior), and Curt Meine and Nina Leopold Bradley (Aldo Leopold's daughter) among others. With a foreword by Charles Wilkinson, who writes at one turn: "The soul of this volume . is found in the many echoes of Aldo Leopold's voice. The reader feels Leopold's presence in the text, the chapter titles, even the artwork." A fine paperback with "Thomas" written boldly on each face of the text block (as was JW Thomas's custom) .
