Slight cracking to gutters causing binding to be loose, however pages remain attached. Pages and photographs have light tanning and foxing throughout. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Marking, sticker and fraying to cloth to front board.

Presumed first edition from this date. 63pp. and 8 black and white illustrations. This is an exhilarating story of wanderings along the 1,780 mile course of the Danube, the Ancient highway from the East to Europe and route followed by migrating tribes and conquering Asiatic hordes into the West. The book is bound in the original cloth covered boards with black titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with fading to the bottom 3" of the spine and about 1/4" of the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper is brittle and is in good condition with shelf wear and light soiling and age-browning around the edges. The top edge is chipped with small pieces missing and up to about 1/2" is missing from around the top of the spine. The bottom 5" or so of the spine is missing and the front has been detached from the spine in the past and reattached with tape on the reverse. There are a few tears on the edges that have also been repaired on the reverse with tape and small pieces are missing from the top corners. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.

This little travel book is undated, but the author's introduction carries the date 1930 so his travels on the Danube were earlier, possibly not long after WWI. As well as exploring the famous and historic waterway the author also paints delightful pen pictures of the people he met, the paces he went. A lovely and well-produced little book of 63 pages, eight sepia tinted photo plates. Rust hard covers with black front titles VG with lightly faded spine, narrow fade strip top front, neat inked insc top front pastedown, few light pencil margin marks, text block otherwise VG.
