This book is a celebration of the beauty and wonder of the natural world, focusing specifically on the common plants and creatures found in the English countryside. The author takes the reader on a journey through the seasons, examining various species of flora and fauna with a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for their significance. The text weaves together scientific observations with poetic reflections, drawing parallels between the natural world and human experience. Through insightful descriptions of the blackberry, wild strawberry, furze blossom, and other familiar plants, the author reveals a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of life, urging the reader to see beauty in the seemingly ordinary. The book is a compelling reminder that even the most commonplace elements of nature hold profound meaning and offer valuable lessons for all. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing of The Girl's Own Annual, Volume XII, comprising The Girl's Own Paper for 1890-1891. Published in London by The "Leisure Hour" Office, 56 Paternoster Row. A particularly attractive example in the original publisher's elaborately decorated blue-green cloth, with extensive gilt and coloured decoration to the upper board and spine. Most strikingly, the original cloth retains a rich blue-green colour: many surviving copies of these Victorian annuals have faded or discoloured substantially towards brown, whereas the colour of this copy remains unusually strong. The gilt is likewise bright and exceptionally attractive, with the elaborate cover design and floral decoration retaining considerable visual impact. The binding is remarkably strong for such a large Victorian volume. Boards firmly attached, text block firmly bound, with no loose leaves and no exposed gutters observed. Some modest wear to the extremities, principally at the spine ends and corners, consistent with age. Internally extensively and beautifully illustrated, with numerous engravings and full-page illustrations, together with colour and folding material. Particularly attractive colour-printed title page. The illustrations remain a major feature of the volume and include work by Kate Greenaway, together with Arthur Hughes, Paul Hardy, Herbert Johnson, W. J. Hennessy, Fred Miller, Clara von Rappard, John C. Staples, Edward Whymper, Alan Wright and numerous other artists of the period. Some foxing is present, principally concentrated in the opening and closing leaves, while much of the main body of the volume is substantially cleaner. A very small corner tear to one of the protective tissue sheets appears to be the only significant physical damage noted (shown in one of the images). Various, including Kate Greenaway, Arthur Hughes, Paul Hardy, Herbert Johnson, W. J. Hennessy, Fred Miller, Clara von Rappard, John C. Staples, Edward Whymper, Alan Wright and others. See image. Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Very Good. Publication: London, Longmans, Green, and Co., 1896 Formatting: 8vo, pp. viii, [ii], 263, 24 (publisher's advertisements). Condition Report Very Good. The original pictorial oatmeal cloth binding remains notably bright and attractive, with the red and brown blocked illustration to the front board retaining strong colour and definition. There is some minor, expected shelf-wear to the extremities, including gentle bumping to the corners and slight softening to the spine ends, alongside a hint of general age-darkening to the spine panel, though the gilt lettering remains perfectly legible. Internally, the binding is tight and structurally secure with no leaning. The original dark brown endpapers are entirely intact. The untrimmed text block shows standard age-toning and mild dusting to the top edge, but the pages remain remarkably crisp and clean throughout, with only very occasional, negligible scattered spotting that does not detract from the text or the plates. A highly pleasing, solid example of a Victorian sporting classic. Catalogue Note First Edition. Part of the highly successful Fur and Feather Series (which shortly thereafter expanded into the Fur, Feather and Fin Series to include angling), this comprehensive monograph features specialist contributions on the natural history, shooting, coursing, hunting, and cookery of the hare. Edited by Alfred E. T. Watson, the volume is richly illustrated throughout with a tissue-guarded frontispiece, title vignette, and seven full-page engraved plates by the noted sporting artists G. D. Giles, Archibald Thorburn, and C. Whymper. This copy features a neat ink inscription to the half-title reading "Arthur Alexander from G.C.W., Xmas / 96", perfectly placing the book's gifting in its year of publication. While individual volumes from this series appear on the open market relatively frequently, locating a true first printing that retains such well-preserved pictorial boards without heavy soiling, structural wear, or modern repairs is increasingly uncommon. A quintessential late-Victorian sporting guide, The Hare offers a definitive look at the animalâs historical role in British field sports. Blending detailed natural history observations with practical, hands-on chapters covering shooting, coursing, hound hunting, and specialised game cookery, this beautifully illustrated volume captures the true essence of 19th-century country pursuits. It remains an indispensable classic for collectors of field sports literature and antiquarian natural history alike. G. D. Giles, A. Thorburn, C. Whymper (illustrator).…
