Issued during the height of World War II, this patriotic song was featured in Irving Berlin's enormously successful This Is the Army, first staged on Broadway before being adapted into the celebrated 1943 Warner Bros. motion picture directed by Michael Curtiz. The film starred members of the Armed Forces alongside George Murphy, Joan Leslie, George Tobias, Alan Hale, Kate Smith, and Lt. Ronald Reagan, then serving as an Army Air Forces officer assigned to the First Motion Picture Unit. The cover advertises that all profits benefited the Army Emergency Relief Fund, making these publications both entertainment and wartime fundraising ephemera. Inside, the song is dedicated to General Henry H. 'Hap' Arnold and the U.S. Army Air Forces, reflecting its aviation theme. Condition is Very Good+. Covers remain bright with strong color and excellent eye appeal. Minor edge wear, light corner rubbing, and a few faint handling marks are present, but there are no significant tears, tape repairs, or writing affecting the music. Interior pages are clean with light age toning consistent with wartime paper. Spine fold remains solid and complete. An attractive, well-preserved example of one of the more visually appealing This Is the Army publications. Original 1942 first issue published by This Is the Army, Inc. during the Broadway production, before or concurrent with the film's national promotion. The rear cover advertises companion songs from the production, while the front prominently promotes the Warner Bros. film release, representing an authentic wartime movie tie-in rather than a later reprint. The greatest hidden feature is the cover artwork by Corporal Dave Breger (1908-1970). Before the war Breger created the popular syndicated cartoon Mister Breger, but he achieved lasting fame after entering the Army, where he created the iconic comic strip G.I. Joe - not to be confused with the later toy line. His affectionate, humorous depictions of everyday military life appeared in Yank, Stars and Stripes, and newspapers nationwide, helping define the visual culture of the American serviceman during World War II. The whimsical letterforms that spell 'This Is the Army' are unmistakably Breger: cartoon soldiers transformed into typography, combining military humor with sophisticated commercial design.
