Nachdem sie in Deutschland die Facharztausbildung beendet hat und die Apartheid politisch überwunden ist, packt sie die Koffer und beginnt im Land ihrer Sehnsucht als Kinderärztin zu arbeiten. Sie landet in einem Strudel aus Armut, Krankheiten, Rassenhass und Gewalt. Und sie gerät ungewollt in eines der Zentren der schlimmsten Seuchen unserer Zeit: Aids. Trotz aller Widrigkeiten und teilweise mit einfachsten Mitteln gelingt es ihr jedoch immer wieder, mit unermüdlichem Einsatz und medizinischem Wissen, das Leben und die Gesundheit unzähliger Kinder zu retten. Durch ihre Arbeit sind aber auch die eigene Gesundheit und ihr Leben mehrmals in Gefahr. Ihre in Südafrika gefundene zweite große Liebe muss schließlich noch eine schwere Prüfung bestehen: eine lebensbedrohliche Krankheit, durch die die Ärztin selber zur Patientin wird. Mit ihrer Hochzeit in den Drakensbergen und in Regensburg endet 2009 die hier erzählte Geschichte von Irina André-Lang, nicht aber das Engagement für die Menschen in Südafrika und Lesotho. Der Journalist Harald Rast lernte Irina André-Lang bei einer Recherche-Reise kennen. Was sie ihm während dieser Reise über ihre Arbeit und ihr Leben berichtete, war so faszinierend, dass die Idee entstand, gemeinsam eine Autobiographie zu schreiben.
