Die alte Provinz Yamato entspricht ungefähr der heutigen Präfektur Nara. Sie liegt zwischen Kyoto Präfektur im Norden und der Wakayama Präfektur im Süden und besteht hauptsächlich aus der Nara-Ebene und dem wegen seiner herrlichen Kirschblüten bekannten Yoshino-Bergland. Die Yamato Provinz spielte in der Geschichte des alten Japan eine führende Rolle. Schon vor der Nara-Periode (8. Jhd.) beherrschte hier der Kaiserhof Yamato mehrere Provinzen des Landes und erweiterte seinen Einfluß auf den größten Teil Japans. Der Name Yamato ist sogar ein Synonym für Japan geworden. Yamato-ji, d. h. die Wege von Yamato oder die Landschaften von Yamato können uns daher heute zahlreiche Sehenswürdigkeiten aus ferner Vergangenheit bieten. Viele Touristen drängen zu den großen Tempeln und zu den berühmten Reiserouten. Aber abseits vom Menschenstrom, verborgen in der Natur, gibt es viele stille Wanderwege. Dort haben wir das Gefühl, als erzählten uns Pagoden und Tempel, Berge und Ströme die Geschichten von vor tausend Jahren. Diese eigenartige Stimmung hat es dem Fotografen Taikichi Irie angetan. Seit 1945 in der Stadt Nara lebend, fotografiert Irie unermüdlich Tempel und Landschaften von Yamato-ji. Zahlreiche Preise und Ehrungen wurden dem heute 73jährigen Künstler zuteil."
