Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. States "First Bluejay printing: October 1984." The ABE computer will not accept as valid the ISBN printed to rear wrap -- 0-312-94174-1. Switching two digits to read 0-312-94147-1 seems to solve the problem. Photographer Perret and project coordinator Mark Bingham drove 23,000 miles t…o photograph 83 science fiction writers, mostly at their homes. The relatively brief text accompanying each photo was authored by the subject him (or her) self. Four authors -- Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, David Brin, and Larry Niven -- have signed this book in ink directly to their page. There's a fifth signature directly to an additional page -- the page of A.E. Van Vogt -- but as with all later Van Vogt signatures, this one is actually signed "Lydia & A.E. Van Vogt" in the hand of Van's second wife, Lydia Bereginsky. (Presumably some disability kept Van from signing in his later years.) Twelve additional authors have signed to special goldenrod bookplates which are then glued to their appropriate page, those being Roger Zelazny, Fritz Leiber, Philip Jose Farmer, Piers Anthony, Damon Knight, Jack Williamson, C.H. Cherryh, Robert Silverberg, Ben Bova, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Frederik Pohl, and Poul Anderson. How to set a value on such an assemblage? Any book of his own (even a paperback) signed by Ray Bradbury will tend to fetch at least $30 to $35 -- many now command much more. Any book of his own signed by Roger Zelazny will bring at least $35 to $45; Fritz Leiber $25 to $30, Philip Jose Farmer $20 to $25 (again, often much more); A.E. Van Vogt (even if actually signed by Lydia) again $20 to $25, at a minimum. And copies of this book bearing only three or four lesser signatures can now run $60. The authors featured here who have NOT signed, but whose signatures tend to be much sought after (just for the record) would likely be led by Ursula Le Guin, Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert, and George R.R. Martin. (Notable in his total absence is Robert A. Heinlein, who would have been aged 77 at the time of publication. Philip K. Dick, unfortunately, had died in 1982. Two further absences are explained by the fact William Gibson's "Neuromancer" wasn't published until 1984; Orson Scott Card's book-length "Ender's Game" till 1985.) This multiple-signed copy now reduced from $300. As with all our items priced higher than $90, this book will be shipped ""signature required.". Photographs by Patti Perret (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).
