"A high-octane legal thriller anchored by a family drama that will break your heart." - Ken Follett, bestselling author. ".a big-hearted page-turner about fighting for what's right in a world filled with wrong." - Jeannette Walls, bestselling author. "An instant classic. Not just a great American crime story; this is a great American novel." - Alex Michaelides, bestselling author. "Terrifying, dazzling, and a true reckoning.a time machine that proves the Civil War never ended - and that the only way out is together." - Brad Meltzer, bestselling author. ".a modern masterpiece. An instant classic from America's favorite storyteller." - Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author. "Set in the tumultuous year of 1968 in southern Virginia, a racially charged murder case sets a duo of white and Black lawyers against a deeply unfair system as they work to defend their wrongfully accused Black defendants in this courtroom drama from #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci. Jack Lee is a white lawyer from Freeman County, Virginia, who has never done anything to push back against racism, until he decides to represent Jerome Washington, a Black man charged with brutally killing an elderly and wealthy white couple. Doubting his decision, Lee fears that his legal skills may not be enough to prevail in a case where the odds are already stacked against both him and his client. And he quickly finds himself out of his depth when he realizes that what is at stake is far greater than the outcome of a murder trial. Desiree Dubose is a Black lawyer from Chicago who has devoted her life to furthering the causes of justice and equality for everyone. She comes to Freeman County and enters a fractious and unwieldy partnership with Lee in a legal battle against the best prosecutor in the Commonwealth. Yet DuBose is also aware that powerful outside forces are at work to blunt the victories achieved by the civil rights movement. Lee and DuBose could not be more dissimilar. On their own, neither one can stop the prosecution's deliberate march toward a guilty verdict and the electric chair. But together, the pair fight for what once seemed impossible: a chance for a fair trial and true justice. Over a decade in the writing, A Calamity of Souls breathes richly imagined and detailed life into a bygone era, taking the reader through a world that will seem both foreign and familiar." - from the inner front jacket flap.

As new condition dark gray boards with red spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Michelle Malkin; Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quotes; Introduction; Conclusion; Acknowledgments; Notes and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and black-and-white diagrams. "If You've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." - President Barack Obama, July 2012, from the rear outer jacket. "The demonization of the one percent will not stop until the 99 percent truly comprehend how much marvelous progress and opportunity they enjoy as a result of the nation's makers and creators. Their stories need to be told early and often . Few of our history lessons emphasize the unique ingredients that created our country's fertile climate for technological progress and entrepreneurship. Foemost among these are profit motive, intellectual property rights, individual risk-taking, venture capital, our unique patent system, and an unwavering belief in American exceptionalism." - Michelle Malkin, in Who Built That, from the rear outer jacket. "Call them America's "Tinkerpreneurs" -- unsung innovators from the past who commercialized their "little" ideas to create products, companies, wealth, and opportunities that thrive today. Enlisting the nation's first venture capitalists, they were tireless, self-made, and largely self-taught. They raised our standard of living with the creation of everyday items we take for granted, from razors to bottle caps, flashlights to bridge cables. And, yes, they made lots and lots of money, by way of a proven success formula known as capitalism. This entertaining and enlightening treasury is, in part #1 New York Times bestselling author Michelle Malkin's response to President Obama's infamous assertion that "if you've got a business, you didn't build that." The firebrand conservative columnist and commentator -- herself an Internet entrepreneur and second-generation beneficiary of the American Dream -- looks deeper into the lives and strategies of the game-changers, outside-the-box innovators, and heroes of the one percent to combat liberal "wealth shaming" and fill the gaps left by other accounts. She examines how factors such as profit motive, intellectual property rights, patriotism, faith, family, and an unwavering belief in American exceptionalism set the stage for the creation of toilet paper, glass bottles, wire rope, the air conditioner, and the hydroelectric power plant. Here's the full story of America's earliest inventors of artificial limbs . the penniless Croatian immigrant who built his $400 million Maglite flashlight business . the surprising inspiration behind the Gillette razor . and much more. Demonized by the Left as greedy villains and selfish barons, these visionaries have nurtured job-creating powerhouses, including cutting-edge companies used today by "progressive" propagandists who can't comprehend how much comfort and convenience they enjoy as a result of the ingenious contributions by these original American dreamers. Are they rich? You bet. They earned their private rewards for the public good. Find out Who Built That -- and the next time you turn on your air conditioner, say thank you." - from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Michelle Malkin, syndicated columnist, veteran of FOX News, and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Culture of Corruption, is the founder of Hot Air and Twitchy dot com. She lives with her husband and two children in the Colorado Springs area.

New condition dark gray boards, black spine and gold spine lettering contained in a new condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Introduction: One Day in May; Notes; Acknowledgments and Index. "Know your rights and protect them. Your freedom depends on it." - from the rear outer jacket. "If you read just one book this year, read Undemocratic - and prepare to have your eyes opened to the true crisis facing our republic." - John Ashcroft, former United States Attorney General. "One of America's leading lawyers, Jay Sekulow has twice been recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America by National Law Journal. He was also named one of the 90 Greatest Washington Lawyers of the Last 30 Years by LegalTimes and recognized for "fighting to expand liberties and protect civil rights." He was also named one of the "Public Sector 45" by The American Lawyer, which said the designation represents "45 lawyers.whose vision and commitment are changing lives." - from the rear outer jacket. "Jay Sekulow's alarming and inspiring Undemocratic is a must-read for anyone who wants to restore American greatness." - Sean Hannity. "Jay Sekulow is one of the top lawyers for religious freedom in the United States." - Townhall Magazine. "The American Center for Law and Justice is the leading advocacy group for religious freedom." - Bloomberg Businessweek. "Jay Sekulow is on a mission to defend Americans' freedom. The fact is that freedom is under attack like never before. The threat comes from the fourth branch of government - the biggest branch - and the only branch not in the Counstitution. The federal bureaucracy. The bureaucracy imposes thousands of new laws every year, without a single vote from Congress. The bureaucracy violatees the rights of Americans without accountability - persecuting adoptive parents, denying veterans quality health care, discriminating against conservatives and Christians for partisan purposes, and damaging our economy with job-killing rules. Americans are bullied by the very institutions established to protect their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Our nation's bureaucrats are on an undemocratic power trip. But Jay has a plan to fight back. We can resist illegal abuse, we can reform a broken system, and we can restore American democracy. This book won't just tell you how to win, it will show you real victories achieved by Jay and the American Center for Law and Justice. Unless we can roll back the fourth branch of government - the most dangerous branch - our elections will no longer matter. Undemocratic is a wake-up call, a call made at just the right time - before it's too late to save the democracy we love." - from the inner front jacket flap.

(interior design); Walrup, Judy (jacket design); Dranitzke, Elizabeth (author photograph) (illustrator). 1st Edition. As new condition navy blue boards with silver spine lettering, contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Dedication; Introduction: Donald Trump - The Nuclear Option; My Endorsements of Donald Trump from June 16, 2015; Acknowledgments; and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. "Charlie Hurt is one of the few people in journalism who correctly predicted the Trump ascendancy and the positive impact Trump's policies have had on America. Smart, courageous, and iconoclastic, whether you agree or disagree, Charlie has written a page turning narrative that will educate, enlighten and drive the Left nuts. A must read." - Sean Hannity. "Charlie doesn't belong on TV or in Washington, D.C. He belongs in a duck blind, which is probably why he got Trump before anybody else up there." - Willie Robertson, New York Times bestselling author. "Whatever your politics, you have to acknowledge that Charlie Hurt was one of the few voices in Washington who never lost his head about Donald Trump's unorthodox political style. Trump had a real message, it was resonating with a lot of voters, and Charlie saw that earlier than most." - John McIntyre, Co-Founder & CEO, RealClearPolitics. "When Donald Trump descended a golden escalator in June of 2015 to announce his candidacy for president, few people in Washington, D.C. took him seriously. Charlie Hurt was different - he was the first major columnist to endorse Trump's campaign and has stuck by him ever since. For that reason, President Trump has regularly reached out to him, offering Hurt rare insight into the man who started a movement that has changed America forever. Still Winning is the story of the unlikliest of heroes who emerged from the rough terrain of New York City real estate to take up the impossible cause of a truly forgotten people. It is also the story of those people - the ones who love their country, trust their God, obey the laws, and will do anything for their families and neighbors. They are the very people the Founders envisioned when they hatched the radical idea of self-governance. The hero of this story is President Donald J. Trump, who has provided an exclusive interview for this book as he plans his 2020 reelection campaign. The Establishment has tried its best to destroy Donald Trump, branding him a racist, a xenophobe, an isolationist, and a dangerous, violence-inciting warmonger. All standards of reporting have vanished. When it comes to Trump, no sort of criticism of off limits. Critics openly mock his looks, ridicule his private business accomplishments, pillory his family and children, and make fun of his foreign-born wife for her accent. And yet, what has the Establishment given the people? Both Democrats and Republicans run for office year after year on promises they have no intention of keeping. Neither side wants to fix a single problem. The whole thing has become one giant, ungovernable, corrupt Ponzi scheme that - one day - will come crashing down. Only Donald Trump is working to fix it. That's what Americans voted for when they sent him to the White House in 2016. Still Winning dramatically retells the story of Trump's stunning victory, and it offers an impassioned plea for why America must go "all in" for the president in 2020. This is the seminal book of the Trump reelection campaign. It is the inside story of how Trump won - and why he will win again." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

His journey reads like fiction, but it's a satisfying nonfiction narrative of a credible operator, and besides doing the gritty work of a SEAL in combat zones, Emerson refined the art and tradecraft of sensitive operations elsewhere in the Middle East - a euphemism for high-risk, quiet operational work - in the shadows." - Chris Costa, Executive Director, International Spy Museum; Deputy DCommander, SUM; former Special Assistant to the President for Counterterrorism. "A riveting look inside the inner workings of the SEAL team culture. This is not your ordinary memoir - it's a fast-paced and hilarious real-life glimpse into what career frogmen experience. A must-read, instant classic." - Mike Ritland, former Navy SEAL, host of Mike Drop podcast, author and creator of teamdog dot pet. "You have to be a bit crazy to be a SEAL.and Clint Emerson takes us on a roller-coaster ride through his career as he demonstrates the 'right kind' of craziness that's required. Buckle your seat belt and be prepared.Clint doesn't mince words or suffer fools kindly, and cares even less about being politically correct. Fortunately, such men still exist, and our country owes Clint and his colleagues a never-ending debt of gratitude." - H. Keith Melton, author of Ultimate Spy. "Clint Emerson, retired Navy SEAL and author of the bestselling 100 Deadly Skills, presents an explosive, darkly funny, and often twisted account of being part of an elite team of operatives whose mission was to keep America safe by whatever means necessary. Clint Emerson is the only SEAL ever inducted into the International Spy Museum. With an instinct for running toward trouble and a unique skill set to operate in the shadows, Emerson was the perfect hybrid operator in the field. Emerson spent his career on the bleeding edge of intelligence and operations, often specializing in missions that took advantage of subrerfuge, improvisation, and the best in recon and surveillance tech to combat the changing global battlefield. MacGyvering everyday objects into working spyware was routine, and fellow SEALs referred to his activities simply as "special shit." His parameters were: find, fix, and finish - and of course, leave no trace. He operated by only two codes: "if you aren't cheating, you aren't trying" and "it's only illegal if you get caught." The Right Kind of Crazy is unlike any military memoir you've ever read, because Emerson is up front about the fact that what makes you a great soldier and sometimes hero doesn't always make you the best guy - but i does make for damn good stories." - from the inner front jacket flap.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Torres, Maria (interior design); Walters, Michael (interior design); Byrne, Tim (cover design); Von Hartz, William (author photo) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Fine unread condition red boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Caleb Carr; Author Dedication; Afterword by Jon Lellenberg (U.S. agent for the Conan Doyle Estate and co-editor of a number of anthologies of new Sherlock Holmes stories, and the historian of The Baker Street Irregulars) and Acknowledgments. "The Author Who Invented The Historical Thriller Takes On The Most Famous Scientific Detective In History. Caleb Carr's newest tale (commissioned by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) begins when Sherlock Holmes reveals to Dr. Watson an encrypted telegram he has received from his brother Mycroft; the famous detective has been summoned to the aid of Queen Victoria in Scotland. Rushed northward on a royal train - and nearly murdered themselves en route - Holmes and Watson are soon joined by Mycroft, and learn of the brutal killings of a renowned architect and his foreman, both of whom had been preparing to renovate a wing of the famous and forbidding Royal Palace of Holyrood, in Edinburgh. Mycroft has enlisted his brother to help solve the murders that may be key elements of a much more elaborate and pernicious plot on the Queen's life. But the circumstances of the two victims' deaths also call to Holmes's mind the terrible murder - in the palace of Holyrood - of "The Italian Secretary," David Rizzio. The only difficulty? Rissio, a music teacher and confidante of Mary, Queen of Scots, was butchered before Mary's very eyes three centuries earlier by supporters of England's Queen Elizabeth (and perhaps with the approval of that uncompromisng ruler herself) in an atttempt to break the spirit of the very independent young Scottish Queen. Holmes proceeds to alarm Watson with the suggestion that the Italian Secretary's vengeful spirit may have taken the lives of the two men as punishment for disturbing the scene of his assassination. Will these two new deaths turn out to be mere coincidence? Have old political rivalries reared their poisonous heads once again? Or has the Italian Secretary indeed exacted his own terrible revenge? Told with his unique feel for historical detail and the architecture of human evil, Caleb Carr's brilliant new offering enriches the Conan Doyle tradition, with a fascinating yet relentlessly-paced tale that extends into a realm unprecedented even for Sherlock Holmes." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Includes Author Dedication; Introduction; Cast of Principal Characters and Sources; Acknowledgments; Sources; Notes and Index. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. "Target: Patton is a terrific book investigating the mysterious death of one of America's greatest military heroes: General George S. Patton, Jr. Reporter Robert Wilcox takes the reader into the mystery : from Patton's suspicious car crash in Occupied Germany in 1945 to his unexpected death two weeks later, bringing to light new evidence and raising serious questions, all of which makes for a fascinating read." - Paul E. Vallely, Major General, U.S. Army (Ret.), Chairman, Stand Up America USA, Co-author of Endgame: The Blueprint for Victory in the War on Terror. "He was the most controversial American general in World War II - and also one of the most successful, courageous, and audacious. As a post-war administrator of defeated Germany, he sounded alarm bells about the dangers of Soviet encroachment into Europe. Politically, he was a lighning rod - an outspoken conservative who continually embarrassed his superiors with his uncensored, undiplomatic, and unrestrained comments to the press. He was General George S. Patton Jr., old Blood and Guts. In 1945, shortly before he was to fly home to the states as a conquering hero, he was involved in a mysterious car crash that left him partially paralyzed. Two weeks later, just as his doctors were about to send him home to finish his recovery, he was dead. The army ruled the car crash an accident, his death natural. Yet witness testimony on the crash conflicted, key players in the incident disappeared, official reports vanished, soldiers were ordered to keep silent, and there was no autopsy performed on the body. Investigative and military reporter Robert Wilcox, author of Black Aces High and Wings of Fury, has spent more than ten years investigating these mysteries, and in Target: Patton he has written an electrifying account of the shocking circumstances - long hidden from the public - surrounding the death of America's most famous general. In Target: Patton, you'll discover: * The extraordinary war hero, artist, and mercenary who said he was ordered by U.S. intelligence to assassinate Patton; * The OSS agent who knew Patton was in danger and tried to save him; * New evidence from recently declassified documents revealing doubts about the official version of Patton's death; * The final stories of those involved in the accident, including those who were thought to have disappeared - until now. Provocative, shocking, and compelling, Target: Patton takes you through the maze of denials, contradictions, and treacheries behind one of the great unsolved mysteries of World War II." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Illustrated with a section of both black-and-white and color photographic plates. "The world breaks everyone and afterward some people are strong at the broken places." - Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms. "7 suicides. Depression. Bipolar disorder. Schizophrenia. Addiction. All in one celebrated, beautiful, brilliant family. The Hemingway family - like millions of other families - has struggled for generations with the pain and shame of mental illness, depression, and addiction. Sadly, they know the tragic reality of suicide and the enduring heartache of those left behind. Born just months after her celebrated novelist grandfather, Ernest Hemingway, took his own life, Mariel grew up with both the promise and the burden of her family's name: immense talent and energy on the one hand, a painful legacy of alcoholism, mental illness, and suicide on the other. The youngest of three sisters, Mariel quickly learned to navigate the treacherous contradictions in her own family: a loving but withdrawn, alcoholic father, a depressed mother who struggled to show affection and who spent years fighting cancer, and two troubled older sisters who grew increasingly out of control. Most evenings, bottles of wine were consumed to smooth over the tensions - but instead ended smashed against the walls. Mariel, hiding under her covers in fear, would sneak downstairs in the middle of the night to clean up after her parents' fights, hoping always to make things right - and normal. Ambitious and eager to escape the chaos of home, Mariel embarked on an acting career at a young age, earning an Oscar nomination in Woody Allen's Manhattan. At the same time, her stunningly beutiful sister Margaux made a dizzying ascent as an iconic supermodel, but all of that would come undone, as Mariel relates in moving detail, as Margaux turned to alcohol and drugs, fell deep into depression, and finlly, suicide - the seventh member of the extended family to do so. Her other sister, Muffet, also began a lifelong battle with mental illness. Mariel, too, struggled. The specter of depression and childhood traumas haunted her. What followed was a decades-long battle with eating disorders (only raw vegetables one month, iced coffee and snack food the next), obsessions about her weight, control issues, and endless mantras in her journal, and unhealthy, needy relationships that left her empty. She tried anything to make her feel in control. But she fought back, found a healthy plan, and against the odds, she flourished. Though in her darkest moments she often felt alone, she was anything but that. Almost a quarter of Americans suffer from some form of mental illness, and more than ten percent struggle with substance abuse. Rates of depression have been growing rapidly since 2000. Worldwide, over 800,000 people die by suicide every year - that's one person every forty seconds. Yet these deaths are often preventable. Mariel knows that there is still a veil of shame associated with mental illness and knows too the pain and heartbreak for families. With candor and clarity, Mariel demonstrates that with compassion, education, and understanding, there is a way out of the darkness." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

As new condition dark blue boards with white spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Preface; Acknowledgments and Photograph Credits. Profusely illustrated with both black-and-white and color photographs. "There we were, all over the globe, in some of the most exotic countries in the world, sharing laughs, living through some crazy adventures. When you travel with someone - particularly in foreign countries - you experience things that can't be fully appreciated by anyone who wasn't there." - from the rear outer jacket. "While preparing to sell his home in Alexandria, Virgina, retired Secret Service agent Clint Hill uncovers and old steamer trunk in the garage, triggering a floodgate of memoires. As he and Lisa McCubbin, his coauthor on three previous books, pry it open for the first time in fifty years, they find forgotten photos, handwritten notes, personal gifts, and treasured mementos from the trips on which Hill accompanied First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy as her Secret Service agent - trips that took them from Paris to London, through India, Pakistan, Greece, Morocco, Mexico, South America, and "three glorious weeks on the Amalfi Coast." During these journeys, Jacqueline Kennedy became one of her husband's - and America's - greatest assets; in Hill's words and the opinion of many others, "one of the best ambassadors the United States has ever had." As each newfound treasure sparks long-suppressed memories, Hill provides new insight into the intensely private woman he always called "Mrs. Kennedy" and who always called him "Mr. Hill." For the first time, he reveals the depth of the relationship that developed between them as they traveled around the globe. Now ninety years old, Hill recounts the tender moments, the private laughs, the wild adventures, and the deep affection he shared with one of the world's most beautiful and iconic women - and these memories are brought vividly to life alongside more than two hundred rare photographs, many of them previously unpublished. In addition to the humorous stories and intimate moments, Hill reveals startling details about how traveling helped them both heal during the excruciating weeks and months following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. He also writes of the year he spent protecting Mrs. Kennedy after the assassination, a time in his life he has always been reluctant to speak about. My Travels with Mrs. Kennedy unveils a personal side of history that has never been told before and takes the reader on a breathtaking journey, experiencing what it was like for Clint Hill to travel with Jacqueline Kennedy as the entire world was falling in love with her." - from the inner front jacket flap.

"While Democrats have long acknowledged our struggles and the crimes enacted against us, they have done very little to provide actual remedies or prepare us for a future that doesn't center on our brokenness. As we approach the 2020 election, I'm asking the black community to consider the realities of our current economic state, the condition of our shcools and neighborhoods, the number of our young men who are incarcerated . For too long we have been lied to by Democrats who havve relied upon our votes to maintain them in power, for too long we have believed that the State is sovereign; we do not belog to the Democrat Party, we do not belong to socialism, we answer to the true God, not the god of government." -- from the Introduction entitled What Do You Have To Lose? "It's Time For A Black Exit. Political activist and social media star Candace Owens addresses the many ways that Democrat Party policies hurt, rather than help, the African American community, and why she and many others are turning right. Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the black community's ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American Dream. Instead, Owens offers up a different ideology by issuing a challenge to her readers: It's time for a major black exodus. From dependency, from victimhood, from miseducation--and the Democrat Party, which perpetuates all three. Owens explains that government assistance is a double-edged sword, that the Left dismisses the faith so important to the black community, that Democrat permissiveness toward abortion disproportionately affects black babies, that the #MeToo movement hurts black men, and much more. Weaving in her personal story, which ushered her from a roach-infested low-income apartment to1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, she demonstrates how she overcame her setbacks and challenges despite the cultural expectation that she should embrace a victim mentality. Well-researched and intelligently argued, Blackout lays bare the myth that all black people should vote Democrat--and shows why turning to the right will leave them happier, more successful, and more self-sufficient." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

"One of our Nation's most distinguished and honored historians, David McCullough has taken his own place in American history. The United States honors David McCullough for his lifelong efforts to document the people, places, and events that have shaped America." - from The Presidential Medal of Freedom Citation and rear outer dust jacket. "Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough rediscovers an important and dramatic chapter in the American story - the settling of the Northwest Territory by dauntless pioneers who overcame incredible hardships to build a community based on ideals that would come to define our country. As part of the Treaty of Paris, in which Great Britain recognized the new United States of America, Britain ceded the land that comprised the immense Northwest Territory, a wilderness empire northwest of the Ohio River containing the future states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. A Massachusetts minister named Manasseh Cutler was instrumental in opening this vast territory to veterans of the Revolutionary War and their families for settlement. Included in this Northwest Ordinance were three remarkable conditions: freedom of religion, free universal education, and most importantly, the prohibition of slavery. In 1788 the first band of pioneers set out from New England for the Northwest Territory under the leadership of Revolutionary War veteran General Rufus Putnam. They settled in what is now Marietta on the banks of the Ohio River. McCullough tells the story through five major characters: Cutler and Putnam; Cutler's son Ephraim; and two other men, Joseph Barker, a carpenter turned architect, and Samuel Hildreth, a physician who became a prominent figure in American science. They and their families created a town in a primeval wilderness, while coping with such frontier realities as trees of a size never imagined, floods, fires, wolves, bears, even an earthquake, all the while negotiating a contentious and sometimes hostile relationship with the native people. Like so many of McCullough's subjects, they let no obstacle deter or defeat them. Drawn in great part from a rare and little-known collection of diaries and letters by the key figures, The Pioneers is a uniquely American story of people whose ambition, courage, and sense of high purpose led them to remarkable accomplishments. This is a revelatory and quintessentially American story, written with David McCullough's signature narrative energy." - from the inner front jacket flap.

"The Founding Fathers are often revered as American saints; here are the stories of those Founders who were schemers and scoundrels, vying for their own interests ahead of the nation's. We now have a clear-eyed understanding of Founding Fathers such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton; even so, they are often considered American saints, revered for their wisdom and self-sacrificing service to the nation. However, within the Founding Generation lurked many unscrupulous figures - men who violated the era's expectation of public virtue and advanced their own interests at the expense of others. They were turncoats and traitors, opportunists and con artists, spies and foreign intriguers. Some of their names are well-known: Benedict Arnold and Aaron Burr. Others are less notorious now but were no less threatening. There was Charles Lee, the Continental Army general who offered to tell the British how to defeat the Americans; William Blount, a territorial governor and champion land-swindler who amassed a private empire in Tennessee; and James Wilkinson, who served fifteen years as a commanding general in the U.S. Army - despite rumors that he spied for Spain and conspired with traitors. The early years of the republic were full of self-interested individuals, sometimes succeeding in their plots, sometimes failing, but always shaping the young nation. A Republic of Scoundrels seeks to re-examine the Founding Generation and replace the hagiography of the Founding Fathers with something more realistic: a picture that embraces the many facets of our nation's origins." - from the inner front jacket flap. "The down and dirty side of the American Revolution and its aftermath is revealed in all of its scandalous glory. As much as we like to remember pride and patriotism, sometimes murder, unrest, and espionage lurked just around the corner." - Brady Crytzer, author. "Shines a distinctive light on the first decades of American independence. Illuminates how the same conditions that struck real fear in the hearts of Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, and Madison represented alluring opportunities for a different set of men." - James E. Lewis, Jr., author. "A rogues' gallery of the shadiest, most dishonest, self-serving, and duplicitous characters who traipsed across the stage of the early American Republic. These figures helped shape the contours of the Early Republic." - Ricardo A. Herrera, author. "Brings together a motley mix of fascinating, sometimes perplexing, and always entertaining individuals to paint a new portrait of the early American Republic. Their failed schemes, duplicitous acts, and otherwise untoward behavior often proved unexpectedly important to shoring up the country's foundations." - Patrick Spero, Executive Director, George Washington Presidential Library. "A feisty romp through early American history, full of corruption, greed, and misunderstood anti-heroes. Provides an innovative approach to the clashing imperial interests feuding on the borders of the new and emerging United States." - Lindsay M. Chervinsky, author.
