Inscribed by Carl Weber on the inside front blank to Ernest C. Marriner. It includes in a tipped in letter to Ernest Marriner dated April 5, 1949 signed by Carl Weber. " Dear Ernest, I was on the point of writing something in this book about "To the author of Little Talks onCommon Things from the author of a Great Big Talk on Uncommon Things" but then I was afraid that this jest might turn sour and lead to your throwing the book in the fire, some cold night; and I don't want you to do that. Ernest C Marriner (1892-1983) was, according to Colby College website, "prominent historical figure in Waterville and the Kennebec Valley. His expertise as a historian is renown. Marriner was affiliated with Colby for over 40 years. Graduating from Colby in 1913, he acted as librarian and professor of bibliography for six years and then taught English for 31 years. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine with blind-stamped chess boards to covers. Inscribed by Capablanca on front end paper. from the library of David DeLucia with a typed manuscript referencing the first edition of this work with Capablanca's hand written correction. (Betts: 10-136) Second American edition. This work is in two parts. In part one the author gives basic instruction, first very briefly, the covering the same points in more detail. In part two he deals with endings, the middle-game, openings, in that order. This was published in London by Bell in the same year. Jose Raul Capablanca y Graupera (19 November 1888-8 March 1942) was a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. A chess prodigy, he is considered by many as one of the greatest players of all time, widely renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. Born in Havana, he beat Cuban champion Juan Corzo in a match two days before his thirteenth birthday on 17 November 1901. His victory over Frank Marshall in a match in 1909 earned him an invitation to the 1911 San Sebastian tournament, which he won ahead of players such as Akiba Rubinstein, Aron Nimzowitsch and Siegbert Tarrasch. During the next several years, Capablanca had a strong series of tournament results. After several unsuccessful attempts to arrange a match with the then world champion Emanuel Lasker, Capablanca finally won the title from Lasker in 1921. Capablanca was undefeated for eight years from 10 February 1916 to 21 March 1924, a period which included the world championship match with Lasker. Capablanca lost the title in 1927 to Alexander Alekhine, who had never beaten Capablanca before the match. Following unsuccessful attempts to arrange a return match over many years, relations between them became bitter. Capablanca continued his excellent tournament results in this period but withdrew from serious chess in 1931. He made a comeback in 1934, with some good results, but also showed symptoms of high blood pressure. He died in 1942 of "a cerebral hemorrhage provoked by hypertension". (Wikipieda) David DeLucia's chess library contains 7,000 to 8,000 chess books, a similar number of autographs (letters, score sheets, manuscripts), and about 1,000 items of "ephemera". DeLucia's library contains such items as "a 15th-century Lucena manuscript, score-sheets ranging from Fischer's Game of the Century against Donald Byrne to all the games of the 1927 New York tournament, eight letters by Morphy, over a hundred Lasker manuscripts, Capablanca's gold pocket watch, [and] the contract of the 1886 Steinitz-Zukertort world championship match". Leather rubbed along spine and corners, scuff mark near lower left corner of back cover. Some foxing, mainly endpapers and flyleaves, untrimmed pages, small closed tear along fore edge of pages 53/54. Inscription on front flyleaf: "The Lord Bishop of Oxford, from GM Fortescue, Dropmore, Aug. 18, 1866." (Lowndes II, 942) A nice example of this scarce publication, with approximately 50 copies being printed and bought up primarily by family. The author of this work, Lord William W. Grenville (1759-1834), was a member of the House of Lords and Prime Minister of England from 1806-1807. His most notable accomplishment during his ministry was the passing of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which resulted in the abolition of the slave trade throughout the British Empire. Lord Grenville's home was Dropmore, which was built in the 1790s, and with his death in 1834, Lady Grenville continued to live at the estate until her death in 1864. Having no children, the home passed into the hands of her nephew, George M. Fortescue (1791-1877). In 1866, Fortescue presented Bishop Samuel Wilberforce (1805-1873) with this copy of his uncle's book of poetry, Nugae Metricae. Bishop Wilberforce was the third son of William Wilberforce, who played a prominent role in the movement to abolish the slave trade in the early nineteenth century. Bishop Wilberforce was involved in the 1860 Oxford debate on evolution, in which he opposed Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Presentation copy of Nugae Metricae by Lord W.W. Hans Müller was an Austrian chess player, theoretician and author of books. Hans Müller (1 December 1896, Vienna - 28 February 1971, Vienna) was an Austrian chess player, theoretician and author of books. Efim Bogoljubow (1889-1952) was a legendary Ukrainian-German chess Grandmaster best known for his fierce competitive longevity, his legendary self-confidence, and his famous quip: "When I am White, I win because I am White. When I am Black, I win because I am Bogoljubow." He twice challenged his fierce rival Alexander Alekhine for the World Chess Championship, playing high-stakes matches in 1929 and 1934. He won consecutive Soviet Championships in 1924 and 1925 before migrating to Germany, where he won the first official German Championship in 1933. His greatest tournament victory came at Moscow 1925, where he finished ahead of world champions Emanuel Lasker and José Raúl Capablanca. Lothar Maximilian Lorenz Schmid (10 May 1928 - 18 May 2013) was a German chess grandmaster. He was born in Radebeul near Dresden into a family who were the co-owners of the Karl May Press, which published the German Karl May adventure novels. He was best known as the chief arbiter at several World Chess Championship matches, in particular the 1972 encounter between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky at Reykjavic. He was also an avid collector of chess books and paraphernalia. It was reputed that he owned the largest known private chess library in the world, as well as a renowned collection of chess art, chess boards and chess pieces from around the globe. A note on the front free endpaper states, that the book in 1885 was handed over to the School of Gymnastics by General Fog. On foot of the same leaf some discoloration left over from a paperlabel.
