Condition: Gut. 96 Seiten; farbige Illustr.; qu.-25 cm; fadengeh., farb. illustr. Orig.-Pappband. Gutes Ex.; an 2 Kanten gering bestoßen. - Französisch; englisch. - Jan van Imschoot / Malerei. - . Un verre vert feerique. There is still a fond de bouillon, a base stock, in Jan Van Imschoot's new exhibition La presentation des absents (The presentation of the absent, 2021). Whereas in his still-life exhibition Le bouillon de onze heures (The eleventh-hour bouillon, 2020) he gave the Dutchman Willem Claeszoon Heda (Haarlem, 1594-1680) tit for tat; in The presentation of the absent he confronts Edouard Manet (Paris, 1832-1883), in the painter's words "a master of the light-hearted approach to the history of art and also the last classical master and the first real modernist". The new series of oil paintings is the second part of a heralded trilogy, in which the man from Ghent who settled in France explores his relationship with the old masters. To date, no information about the title or content of the third part of the trilogy has been forthcoming. In the painting entitled Le combat contre I'aube (2020) in the exhibition Le bouillon de onze heures, we saw the artist sail away in his boat. At the time there was nothing to suggest that Jan Van Imschoot was on his way to (the oeuvre of) Edouard Manet, though in retrospect the sloop was of course the vessel with which the French marquis Henri Rochefort, politician and from 1868 the founder of the political, anti-Second Empire newspaper La Lanterne (which was published in Brussels), managed in spectacular fashion to escape the cells of New Caledonia in 1874, having been sent there the previous year for his role in the Paris Commune. Edouard Manet had already painted this sloop twice. However, Henri Rochefort is not the protagonist in The presentation of the absent. That honour falls to Suzanne, as we will see. Once again, in one way or another, the 'chapters'in The presentation of the absent exhibition are all table-pieces. Even the central work L'echange des betises (2021), which measures a whopping 190 x 340 cm, is, all things considered, an alternative breakfast or ostentatious still life but certainly a luncheon, a dejeuner. It is nothing less than Van Imschoot's answer to Edouard Manet's Luncheon on the Grass (1863). (Seite 11) ISBN 9782917515426 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 950.
