Who else but Tony Sarg (1880-1942), the German-American puppeteer and illustrator known as "America's Puppet Master," to best depict the story of the puppet Pinocchio, who came to life as a real boy? A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1940,… this hardcover quarto has red "washable" cloth-covered boards stamped with bold black lettering to front & spine. Condition is just Fair, downgraded to child's crayon scribbles to front cover, front endpapers, & 3 internal pages (out of 122 pages total). Scattered smudges & soil, heaviest to external fore edge pages. The good news is that Sarg's 6 full-color plates are Fine: bright & colorful with no defects. He also provided smaller illustrations on nearly every page. Child's name & "1943" date in pencil to ffep; pages otherwise unmarked (except for aforementioned crayon). Boards heavily rubbed to extremities, binding strong, hinges secure. The unclipped DJ is colorful & bright, though soiled in spots, with some paper loss to both ends & center of spine & smaller chips & creasing all around; nicely preserved in new clear mylar cover free!
