Each features different young characters in slightly different settings (CA, AZ, NM), but hang together cohesively as a series (J. White series blog). In 282 pages + 2 pages of additional Whitman titles in rear, with checkerboard endpapers & tri-tone frontispiece & sketches throughout by John Walter. Orig. published in 1954, this is a later (1964) printing of that FIRST EDITION (Whitman#1502), with different cover art. Small octavo (5.5" x 7.75") has glossy paper-covered boards with a clear, tissue-thin acetate covering, which is peeling in many places. Condition is VG+: exceptionally clean , binding strong & straight, hinges intact. Pages moderately tanned, heavier around edges, but supple & unmarked. Slight rubbing to extremities, teeny chip at top edge of front board, heavier at all corners & both ends of spine, with some paper loss here. No DJ, as issued. In 1863 he became deputy librarian and continued in that post until he retired in 1882. The titles in this series were published in separate booklets with gaily decorated and gilded stiff-paper covers with a coloured frontispiece. The books in the series were published by Joseph Cundall and printed by Charles Whittingham. Each book has been illustrated by a different artist. (One of a set of 35 handsome facsimiles in 28 slipcases.).

Internally, a good, clean copy, with light foxing and marking to the pages. Gift inscription to Hélené, the wife of Prince Roger de Podenas (an Indre Loire dignitary). After and engraved title, there are 13 engraved text leaves, and 12 engraved leaves, each plated with a printed (titled) paper guard. Complete. The book has been recently restored, so the perfect binding is perfect once more ! (Perhaps the most inaccurate bookbinding term, this style of binding is notorious for its falling apart as the glue disintegrates. A very nice copy.
