Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. SEA AND SUSSEX FROM R. KIPLING S VERSE ILLSTRD BY DONALD MAXWELL 1926 1ST. I am very pleased to be able to offer you this wonderful book, of stunning watercolors that so poignantly celebrate the wit of Rudyard Kiplingsee for example, his wonderful short poem about a buoy in the sea, on page 26: I dip and I surge and I swing, In the rip of the racing tide, By the Gates of doom I sing, On the horns of death I ride and the painting that illustrates it. You had better buy this one quickly as I might decide to keep it. For your consideration then, I present the Sea and Sussex from Rudyard Kipling s Verse , illustrated by Donald Maxwell. This medium-sized book is bound in blue hard cover boards with small gilt titles on cover and spine; it measures 7 ¾ x 10 inches and contains 96 pages. It was published, as the First American Edition, by Doubleday, Page & Company of Garden City, New York, dated 1926 and a First Edition (so stated). Contents: The book opens with an Introductory Poem by Kipling although it is unclear if this poem was composed specifically for the book or not. As it turns out, Donald Maxwell s mother was a relative of Kipling so it is possible, and Kipling was alive at the time of publication of this book. This opening poem is followed by another 24 poems, each with an appropriate painting by the Artist. These paintings, watercolors I believe, are very nice and any number of them are of nautical themes. Please see the photos to best appreciate this man s art. The paintings are tipped-in, blank on the reverse and outlined with an embossed frame. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The covers show some light edge wear, particularly along the bottom edge and at the corners and at the top & bottom of the spine. The very understated gilt titles on both cover and spine are a bit faded but still legible. There is some discoloration in the upper front gutter and a small white spot on the rear board. Inside, there is some light age-toning, particularly to the endpapers while the rest of the pages and plates are generally clean and bright. I did note that one of the plates (pg. 71) is loose but still present where it belongs and I believe it could easily be re-glued in place. The hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library.
