Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Jane Cable (1906) by George Barr McCutcheon is a melodramatic novel set in early 20th-century Chicago. It follows the life of Jane Cable, a beautiful young woman who believes she is the biological daughter of wealthy railroad magnate David Cable. In truth, she was adopted from…a foundling hospital by Mrs. Cable, who deceived her husband to end a marital estrangement. The story unfolds as Jane becomes engaged to Graydon Bansemer, unaware that his father, James Bansemer, knows her true origins and seeks to prevent the marriage. After a series of dramatic events, including Jane's heartbreak and Graydon's enlistment in the army, the elder Bansemer's confession clears Jane's name, leading to a reunion with Graydon. Jane Cable was a bestseller in 1906 and was serialized in newspapers in 1908. The novel explores themes of identity, social status, and the complexities of family secrets.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A satirical almanac produced by the staff of the John W. Luce publishing company. The staff takes a kitchen sink approach: zodiac readings, gardening hints, bios of the rich and famous like Heddy Green and Teddy Roosevelt. Sophisticated illustrations. Cover pastedown on green, rough-…weave patterned cloth. Printed at The Plimpton Press. Provenance is the Choate estate in Amesbury MA with a period Home Library book plate for J. T. Choate of Amesbury on the upper left corner of the front pastedown, which has entries for date acquired, volume number and price (75 cents!). The Choate family figures prominently in the history of the towns on the north shore of Boston: many features of the town of Amesbury still bear the Choate name.
