Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The frontispiece portrait and four additional internal plates are all in full color -- frontispiece portrait repeated in B&W to front pastedown. All the men, particularly, appear to the modern eye to be costumed for some comic opera. (The autumn of 1914 would take care of that.) A "good" hardcover 12mo, but with a stub where the FFE has been cut away, possibly to remove the name of a previous owner, though the PON "Edna Forsyth" remains written in ink to top of front pastedown. Small label of Henry R. Johnson / Bookseller & Stationer / Springfield Mass at bottom rear. It also appears the cloth spine covering may have been glued down (which is unwise), and pg. 191-192 has come loose but is laid in. A Southern Belle travels to Europe and, of course, finds wonderfully unlikely romance, presumably with an aristocrat dressed as a Capucin monkey. 357 pp. With Illustrations by Harrison Fisher (illustrator).…

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Jane Cable (1906) by George Barr McCutcheon is a melodramatic novel set in early 20th-century Chicago. It follows the life of Jane Cable, a beautiful young woman who believes she is the biological daughter of wealthy railroad magnate David Cable. In truth, she was adopted from a foundling hospital by Mrs. Cable, who deceived her husband to end a marital estrangement. The story unfolds as Jane becomes engaged to Graydon Bansemer, unaware that his father, James Bansemer, knows her true origins and seeks to prevent the marriage. After a series of dramatic events, including Jane's heartbreak and Graydon's enlistment in the army, the elder Bansemer's confession clears Jane's name, leading to a reunion with Graydon. Jane Cable was a bestseller in 1906 and was serialized in newspapers in 1908. The novel explores themes of identity, social status, and the complexities of family secrets. …
