Add to basketCondition: Near Fine. Limited Edition. Limited edition, #153 of 250 numbered copies printed on Arches vellum. 234, [3] pp., illustrated with 12 elegant full-page pochoir prints. Fine binding signed by Dubois d'Enghien-Dooms (Belgium), laced in boards. Bound in full chocolate morocco titled in gilt on spine, morocco doublures rul…ed in gilt, marbled endsheets flecked with gilt, all edges gilt. Original cover sheet and spine bound in. Near Fine with light wear to joints, light toning to cover sheet, and faint offsetting from illustrations to facing pages. A stunning Art Deco showpiece illustrated by Andre Edouard Marty, who sat on the jury for the 1925 exposition that gave the art movement its name. Marty was one of the chief contributors to the fashion magazine La Gazette du bon, which was illustrated with the same pochoir technique used for this book. The printers used stencils to layer color by hand over black keyline drawings, a labor-intensive process that flowered in Paris during the early 20th century and produced jewel tones and textures that conventional printing methods couldn't match. The book was printed by the workshop of master printer Frazier-Soye, who did the coloring himself. The author of this sensual tale, Count Francois de Bondy, was a relative of Saint Charles de Foucauld (canonized 2022), who abandoned the dissipation of his aristocratic youth to become a Trappist monk and priest. Foucauld was a cousin and close friend of Bondy's mother and wrote letters to mother and son during his long sojourn in North Africa, where he was eventually killed by a bandit in 1916. Whatever Saint Charles would have made of Constance, he certainly would have appreciated the illustrations ? he himself used to embellish his letters to young Francois with tiny watercolors.
