Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Complete. Ariel Poem was a series originally commissioned by T S Elliot with a number of aims: to publish an unpublished poem by a major poet with commissioned artwork from a leading artist, with a Christmas theme. These were intended to be an alternative to Christmas cards. However, even though they have drifted from the Christmas them, these pamphlets, with the contents sewn, are still utterly charming and really rather lovely. This edition is from Stephen Spender - a friend of the difficult Auden and who spent considerable energy trying to hide his well known homosexuality from his disapproving but devoted wife, Natasha. The covers have wear but are neat, the pages have evidence of contented use. The pages though are benign, clean and clear and sure. The coloured painting Lynton Lamb is bright and serene. fk.
