Covering matter of historical intetest as wel as those of present-day usage, it containes over 1,500 entries, from the briefest definitions to articles of 500 words or more, illustrated by diagrams of musical instruments and by musical examples. In general, cross references have been avoided. Where conveinet, information is summarized under an appropriate heading and given in more detail under individual entries. It has been sought to make this dictionary readable as well as informative, and of value to both student of music and the general reader. The articles on important composers, for instance, besides giving such facts as the dates and places of their birth and death, indicate the circumstances of their lives, their contributions to music, and their influence on the course of musical development. Similarly, articles on musical instruments refer to their invention and evolution, describe their structure and mechanism, in some cases with the help of diagrams, and indicate their use in the orchestra or otherwise.
