Contact seller5-star sellerSoft cover. Average. Wear and loss along fold lines. Wormholes at bottom-left. Periodic foxing. Size 31 x 21.5 Inches. This is a 1937 Fuchida Tadayoshi map of China published in King (???) magazine during the opening phase of the Second Sino-Japanese War (World War II). A Closer Look Between the front (recto) and back (verso), the map shows the entire front of the early phase of the conflict, from Japanese puppet states in Manchuria and northern China to China's southern coastal provinces of Fujian and Guangdong. At front is the coastal regions of northern China, roughly as far as Shanghai, where Japanese influence was already strong after years of expanding its military and economic presence. The level of detail is extraordinary, particularly for a popular publication, but also highlights the immensity of the task facing Japan if it intended to occupy all of China. It is worth noting that, at the time of publication, it was not clear that the hostilities in China would evolve into a full-scale, protracted war. Japan initially hoped for more Chinese concessions and piecemeal territorial gains, and later aimed to deliver a severe enough blow to force Chiang to surrender. Full mobilization on a total war basis only commenced the following year, when it became clear that Chiang and his troops had no intention of surrendering despite losing Shanghai, Nanjing, and much else. Verso Content The back (verso) includes two larger maps, a wider perspective of eastern China and a map of central China from Shanghai southwards, respectively. The inset maps are, starting at top-right and moving clockwise, Beiping (Beijing), Tianjin, Qingdao, Guangdong (Guangzhou), Hong Kong, Wuhan (Hankou, Wuchang, and Hanyang), Jinan, Shanghai, and Nanjing. The Battle for Shanghai and Its Aftermath Starting with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria (the 'Mukden Incident') in September 1931, Chinese and Japanese troops fought on-again, off-again battles in northern China for several years. One of these many skirmishes took place on July 7, 1937, at the 'Marco Polo Bridge' (Lugouwiao ???), just to the southwest of Beijing. Chiang Kai-Shek was reluctant to throw his armies into a full-scale war against the better trained and equipped Japanese forces, but was compelled to bow to public pressure and launch the long-expected war. Chiang decided to dedicate the bulk of his best trained and equipped forces to a battle for Shanghai, allowing Beijing (at this time Beiping) to fall along with the rest of coastal north China, which was already within Japan's sphere of influence and virtually impossible to defend. Chiang also decided to focus on Shanghai because of the city's international profile and the large numbers of foreigners there; his strategy for winning the war relied in part on gaining foreign support, which ultimately succeeded. Due to the speed and surprise of their attack, Chinese troops at first succeeded in seizing territory defended by Japanese garrison forces in Shanghai, but lost momentum as Japanese reinforcements and heavy weapons came into play. Chinese-administered parts of the city, particularly Zhabei and Wusong to the north and east of the International Settlement, along with the Japanese neighborhood of Hongkou in the International Settlement, saw extensive bombardment and house-to-house fighting. Despite the valiant efforts of Chinese troops, Japanese forces had naval, air, and artillery superiority and were able to receive sufficient resupply and reinforcements, gradually turning the tide over several months. With most Chinese forces engaged in and around the city, a massive pincer counter-attack was prepared, similar to the Soviet victory at Stalingrad six years later. Severely weakened by the fighting in Shanghai and with many units in disarray, Chiang arranged a hasty defense of Nanjing while planning for a retreat to Chongqing, deep in the Chinese interior, to prepare for a long-term war of attrition. King Magazine and Ko?dansha King (???) was a mont.…

Contact seller5-star sellerSoft cover. Very good. Verso repairs and reinforcement along original fold lines. Toning. Size 21 x 15.5 Inches. This is a colorful, richly illustrated November 1, 1937 (Showa 12) Ishida Eisuke propaganda manga map of China, Korea, Manchuria, and Japan in the early months of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937 - 1945). Despite the cartoonish figures, the topic was deadly serious and Ishida was able to include or allude to a great deal of information on military affairs and geopolitics while also conveying the Japanese, or at least the Japanese government's, views on the war. A Closer Look at the Map The map indicates major rail and air routes in East Asia and the resources provided by different areas, along with the location of Chinese fortifications, 'red areas' (??????, the red T shapes), Japanese-occupied areas, and areas under Japanese arial bombardment. As was common with Japanese wartime propaganda, Chinese civilians appear to eagerly welcome Japan's invasion, as do Mongols, including one soldier of the Mongolian People's Republic. The largest inset at bottom gives a day-to-day chronicle of the progression of the war in China on several fronts. The verso contains maps of the situation in Jiangnan (the Lower Yangzi region) and in Shanghai, with insets explaining recent developments as well as political and military terminology. Women's Club (?????) This map was issued as an appendix for the November 1937 issue of Women's Club (?????), a fashion and home life magazine that focused on children's fashion, cooking, and interior design. As militarism in Japan and the conflict in China intensified, there was a backlash against the 'modern girl' trend of the 1920s, and the ideology of 'good wife, wise mother' (????) predominated. But this map hints at the dramatic changes in gender roles that the war would bring about. Much as in the West, the war effort pulled Japanese women out of the home and into offices and factories. These trends continued after Japan's surrender and occupation in 1945, aided by the elimination of wartime social controls and weakening of nationalist-patriarchal ideology. Popular Culture and Wartime Propaganda Although anime and manga are usually associated with postwar Japanese popular culture, these forms of cultural production have a deeper history and manga was already the object of popular consumption when the war in China began. As in the United States and other countries, comics and animation were utilized as a form of propaganda during the war. In Japan, two films ( Momotar?'s Sea Eagles , 1942 and Momotar?: Sacred Sailors , 1945) using the popular Momotar? character and other figures from Japanese folklore were important not only for their propaganda effect, but also because they were the earliest animated films in Japanese history and among the earliest in Asia. Outside of animation, popular magazines like Women's Club and Boys' Club (?????) were enlisted in promoting militarist nationalism, as when the former publication appeared to celebrate the killing of Chinese prisoners of war in Nanjing. The 'China Incident' Starting with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria (the 'Mukden Incident') in September 1931, Chinese and Japanese troops fought on-again, off-again battles in northern China for several years. One of these many skirmishes took place on July 7, 1937, at the 'Marco Polo Bridge' (Lugouwiao; ???), just to the southwest of Beijing. Chiang Kai-Shek was reluctant to throw his armies into a full-scale war against the better trained and equipped Japanese forces but was forced to bow to public pressure and launch the long-expected war. Chiang decided to throw the bulk of his forces into a battle for Shanghai, which was raging when this map was distributed. This effort proved unsuccessful after several months of bitter fighting. Severely weakened by the fighting in Shanghai and with many units in disarray, Chiang planned a retreat to Chongqing (??), deep in the Chinese interior, and prepared for a long-term wa.…

1937 Kobayashi Map of Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, World War II
- Map
Seller: Geographicus Rare Antique Maps, Brooklyn, NY, U.S.A.Geographicus Rare Antique Maps
Contact seller5-star sellerVery good. Slight wear at the fold lines. Grommet holes punched in the margins. Size 59.5 x 81 Inches. This is a very large and rare 1937 Kobayashi Matashichi map of southern China, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. The map anticipates Japanese interest in this vast and resource-rich region, an area soon to be engulfed in the Pacific War (1941 - 1945) and subsumed to Japanese imperial ambitions. Given its tremendous size and detail, it is likely this map was prepared for internal military use in anticipation of Japanese expansion into the Pacific, the East Indies, Southeast Asia, and China. Centered on the strategically critical Philippine Islands, coverage extends from Korea to Australia and from the Bay of Bengal to Micronesia. A Closer Look at the Map The map's legend shows elevation and other geographic features, political boundaries, major cities, locations of Japanese consulates and embassies, telegraph, shipping, and rail lines, and information on how the scale was determined. An inset at top-right places the covered area in the context of the world map, which includes time zones, territories of different empires, and major rail and telegraph lines. Marked off prominently at right is the Japanese South Seas Mandate inherited from Germany after World War I (1914 - 1918) and the Australian-controlled Territory of New Guinea. It is likely this map was used for military or government purposes, and the grommet holes along the margin suggest that it was hung for regular reference. Geopolitical Context and Portents By 1837, Japan had established a long-standing interest in the western Pacific and China Sea regions. This area was known in Japan as Nany? (??) and in China as Nanyang, referring to the prevalence of Japanese and/or Chinese diaspora. Japan asserted hegemony over these areas due partially to the Japanese diaspora settled there, but also for the region's strategic and economic value. Japan's imperial ambitions required control of the Asia-Pacific to supply much needed raw materials for the ever-hungry war machine. As tensions with China worsened through the late 1930s, the overlapping but typically more populous Chinese diaspora was seen as a problematic source of anti-Japanese sentiment and financing for the Chinese war effort. These groups were systematically suppressed and co-opted to support Japanese interests. This map was made soon after the full-scale outbreak of war between Japan and China, as the decisive battle for Shanghai (towards top-left) was raging. Despite regular success on the battlefield, Japan's strategy of pushing Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek to surrender failed. As Chiang's forces and a wide array of partisans, including the Communists, kept up resistance, Japan moved to cut off their supply lines. This, along with the need for oil, rubber, and other resources, eventually led Japan to invade and occupy, to one extent or another, much of the territory presented here, beginning with French Indochina in September 1940, and the Philippines in December 1941. Publication History and Census This map was printed on November 1, 1937 and distributed on November 5. It was printed by Kobayashi Matashichi (????; fl. c. 1905 - 1943) working in conjunction with Senryu?do? (???). The only known institutional holding of this map is at Kyushu University and it has no known history on the market.…
