Although the guinea pig was a common laboratory rodent, little was known about reproductive biology in the other species until this ambitious research program of Barbara Weir and her mentor I.W. Rowlands. Much of their work and of others then in the field was summarized at a symposium held 50 years ago at The Zoological Society of London. Currently, there is a resurgence of interest in the reproductive biology of the South American species. Compared to other rodents, unique features include a long gestation, a long oestrous cycle, a tendency to form accessory corpora lutea and a vaginal closure membrane. There is a distinctive placental structure, the sub placenta. Most give birth to precocial young. Individual species exhibit peculiarities such as polyovulation, systematic fetal loss and an active female prostate. Contents: Taxonomy (What is an Hystricomorph); The Evolution of the Old World and New World Hystricomorpha; The Cephalic Arteries of Hystricomorph Rodents; Hystricomorph Chromosomes); Ecology and Behavior (The Tuco-Tuco and Plains Viscacha; Mountain Viscacha; Notes on the Ecology of Gundis); Reproductive Physiology; Endocrinology.

It is a work of both scholarship and synthesis, full of insight, and communicated in an accessible and professional way. " -Norman Housley, University of Leicester ; This authoritative and concise work surveys the range of warfare in the high Middle Ages while reflecting on the society that produced these military struggles. The book brings together for the first time a wealth of information on such topics as knighthood, military organization, weaponry and fortifications, and warfare in the East. In 1095 with the launching of the First Crusade, Europeans established a great military endeavour to save the Holy Land, an undertaking that remained a central preoccupation until the end of the thirteenth century. While the expeditions that went forth to fight the Muslims involved armies of exceptional size, much of the warfare within western Europe itself was conducted by small armies on behalf of landowners who were often neighbours and kin. In his approach to his subject, John France considers political, social, and economic development in the age of the crusades. He emphasizes the significance of four factors in shaping medieval warfare: the dominance of land as a form of wealth, the limited competence of government, the state of technology that favoured defence over attack, and the geography and climate of western Europe. His coverage of the castle and the knight in armour depicts the role of landowners in producing these characteristic medieval instruments of war. In addition, France provides an extensive analysis of battles in which he reconstructs a series of encounters in superb detail. ; John France is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Wales, Swansea. ; Contents: Acknowledgements -- Plates and plans -- 1 Proprietorial warfare -- 2 The weapons of war -- 3 War, society and technology -- 4 Warfare and authority -- 5 Men of war: cavalry -- 6 Men of war: infantry -- 7 The nature of the castle -- 8 Castles and war -- 9 Fortifications and siege -- 10 Armies -- 11 Commanders -- 12 Campaign, battle and tactics -- 13 Battle and the development of war -- 14 Europe, ideology and the outsider -- 15 Crusading and warfare in the Middle East -- 16 Perspectives -- Appendix I: The Battle ofBouvines, 21 July 1214 -- List of Abbreviations -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index. Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. The Biology of Hystricomorph Rodents. Couple of slight marks to cloth. Slight shelf wear to edges of D/J. Slightly sunned spine to D/J. This work is the outcome of a symposium held at The Zoological Society of London in June 1973 which focussed on the Hystricomorpha, the rodent suborder comrptising the guinea-pig, chinchilla, coypu, porcupine and about 180 other species living mainly in South America and Africa. Detailed asnatomical and endocrinological studies show the internal diversity of the group, and a series of papers draws attention to its interesting reproductive physiology. Accounts of some of the species in their natural habitats and the synthesis of behavioural patterns serve to remind us that these animals are not just common domestic or laboratory animals but ones that have an intriguing past and an increasingly valuable future in bio-medical research. Here then, is a reference work which contains much new information in the form of reviews and syntheses of the various biological subject areas of this extraordinary group of rodents. its publication will be welcomed by zoologists and members of the various disciplines represented, including ecologists, conservationasts, reproductive phsyiologists, biochemists and anatomists.
