Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The Battle of France, Defeat, Retreat & Evacuation from DunkirkThe dawn of the 1930s saw the East Riding Yeomanry, 'Wenlock's Horse', having lost its horses after the end of the First World War, firmly established in the guise of the 26th (East Riding Yeomanry) Armoured Car Company, Royal Tank Corps, one of the earliest British Army cavalry units to mechanise. But as the decade wore on, increasing tensions with Germany saw the company enlarged to two full regiments in 1939, once again as the East Riding Yeomanry. This is the story, told largely through eyewitness accounts, of the 1st East Riding Yeomanry, dispatched to France in February 1940 and given the unenviable task of holding back the German Blitzkrieg to buy time for the rest of the British Army to escape via Dunkirk. It is the story of desperate rearguard actions fought before Regiment was surrounded and overwhelmed at Cassel on the night of 29th/30th May 1940 and of the five long years of captivity as Prisoners of War that followed. It is the story too of those few who escaped from Dunkirk and who, bolstered by men from the 2nd East Riding Yeomanry, formed the nucleus of an almost entirely new Regiment, licking their wounds and preparing for a return to Europe.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket. …

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The Advance from Normandy through Europe to the BalticIn April 1943 the East Riding Yeomanry, 'Wenlock's Horse', rebuilt as an armoured regiment following the debacle of 1940, learned that it would be amongst the assault waves for the liberation of Europe. This is the story, told largely through eyewitness accounts, of the East Riding Yeomanry's part in the liberation of Europe: landing on Sword Beach on D-Day 6th June 1944 the Regiment took part in fierce fighting to consolidate and expand the Normandy beachhead. After Normandy, the ERY saw action in Holland, liberating the city of s'Hertogenbosch, before being rushed into Belgium to help counter, and then squash, the German Ardennes offensive, known as the 'Battle of the Bulge', in the harshest of winter conditions.Subsequently re-equipped with 'Buffalo' amphibious carriers, the ERY was tasked with transporting the assault infantry across the river Rhine in March 1945. The Regiment ended the war at Laboe on the Baltic coast, guarding thousands of German prisoners. The story concludes with an account of the Regiment post war, until amalgamation in November 1956 to form the Queen's Own Yorkshire Yeomanry.Today the history and traditions of the Regiment rest with 'A' Squadron, Queen's Own Yeomanry in York.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry was formed in the aftermath of the Boer War by Beilby Lawley, Lord Wenlock, and henceforth known unofficially as 'Wenlock's Horse'.This is the story, told largely through eyewitness accounts never before published, of a British Territorial Army cavalry regiment thrust into the maelstrom of the First World War.Despatched to Egypt, the Regiment saw active service against the Turks in the Palestine campaign of 1917, participating in some of the final cavalry charges of the British Army, and leading to the fall of Jerusalem. In response to the German Spring Offensives of 1918, the Regiment was rushed to France as machine gunners, where they experienced first-hand the realities of trench warfare on the Western Front as they took part in the final Allied offensives of the war.The Great War signalled the beginning of the end of horses in modern warfare, and the East Riding Yeomanry was amongst the first units in the British Army to mechanise, becoming an armoured car company of the Royal Tank Corps in the 1920s.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…
