Full-Leather. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. A fair to good copy in contemporary tree calf binding. Classed as 'fair' largely because the binding is splitting at the spine joints, particularly the front joint and there is some damage to the top of the spine. The spine has gilt compartments and title label. It is slightly darkened. Boards are clean with a ? water mark on the back board. There is scuffing and wear to edges and corners with leather loss. Contents: initial blank; half title; title; dedication 4pp; subscriber list pp 11-22; introduction 3 pp; text pp 27-68 with 3 plates, 1 folding; appendices x 3 pp 1 - 197; Finis; a 'ps' of additions pp 198-199; directions to binder 1p. There are some old burn marks and the occasional spot. The text is generally toned, but clean. The plates are browned with some offsetting to text.

Three foldout engravings, 8.5 x 5.5", gilt ruled and blindstamped full green morocco, raised bands, highly decorated panels, red leather spine label, covers have gilt dec edges, teg, (8), 199 + index + directions to binder. Covers have light scuffing/scratching, spine darkened and label chipped, corners/spine tips bumped and worn, contemporary bookplate, plates have foxing and one has an archival repair else very good condition. The bookplate is that of James Whatman (the Younger, not shown), the son of James Whatman, the Elder (1702-1798). The father was a paper maker, the inventor of woven paper which was used for high quality art and printing, "the Younger" (1741-1798) continued his father's work. On the title page is stated that it was printed at the Logographic Press. Logographic printing is a form of movable type printing where the font is comprised of words/parts of words instead of single letters. Although not in wide use, several books were produced using this method in the 18th century. A gorgeous book with great history. FIRST EDITION.
