Add to basketSoft Cover Full Gloss. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. ### Legends of Exmoor - 1972 ### ## THIS BOOK: So many legends and compelling reading, maybe not on your own at times, fantastic, horror and absurd, but a legend is a legend; there is no smoke without fire! an owners name inscribed on free endpaper. Clean book it has been read but looked after, some shelf rubbing that's all I can see.## ## Legends are like stalks that have grown out of a grain of truth and has remained waving like a magic wand. It is challenging to grasp cleanly without something else coming away in one's hand: A ghost, a little lore or the root of a tradition. The extraneous cannot be discarded; indeed, it contributes to the legend's weight. For this reason, I have tried to examine the backgrounds against the legends in this book are set. In nearly every story, a certain amount of fact is a foundation. In the exceptions, such as fairy and the woman-into-hare tales, one must admire the old storytellers for such a display of conviction that one feels like apologising for a sceptical mind! Perhaps, the purest legend inventions are the very extremes, tie De.il and his astonishing physical labours on the one hand; the Christian saints and their adventures on the other. The rubber century scepticism never succeeds entirely in erasing a legend. Conversely, and rather delightfully, traditional belief has usually Ezzted reasoned argument. An ecclesiastical commission of enquiry may pronounce that a certain widow never re-appeared her death, yet it fails to kill the belief at the time and cannot the legend. No treasure was buried under Exmoor's famous Caractacus stone, but that does not stop a secretive visit to the place Eight and an apparent attempt to start a dig. In the 20th too! An Elizabethan cannonball flies thousands of miles kind at the portals of an old mansion. Nonsense? Yet on a century occasion, an almost fearful mark of respect is shown for the story! Did the Exmoor farmer always thresh his corn, or was he helped by the little pixie people? What broke an attic window of House? Stone-throwing by youngsters or, was it the tapping of a mysterious white dove exalting the spirit of a beheaded queen?-## #### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. Book does have a few school stamps and marks inside the front and back covers and on the first title page, but this is overall a nice book.
