Small hardback, 5" x 6 " 204 pages, including an index and 20 pages of illustrations of complex instruments, including pyrometers and flash testers. Mostly numerical tables, but several detailed essays on subjects such as: hydrometers, properties of steam, and specific gravity. Also on emulsibility and saponification tests. Especially useful are the full-page outlines of processes involved in the distillation of crude oil, showing the different end products and their intermediate phases. For instance: crude oil > lamp oil > sludge > acid oil > asphalt. Or: crude oil > lubricating distillate > slack wax > crude parafin wax > parafin wax. The same outlines show which process is used to transform the crude oil into the next phase, processes such as fractional distillation, cold pressing, or the sweating process.
