(Oxford modern languages and literature monographs) Assessing the background in 1833 of the Tracts for the times in the light of Christopher Dawson's discussion in The spirit of the Oxford movement: "When [Richard Hurrell] Froude returned to England affairs moved quickly. It is just possible that…Dawson is right in thinking that the idea for the Tracts came from the Avenir. In view of the fate of its editor, any reference to this fact would necessarily be omitted from contemporary accounts of the decision to publish the Tracts. On the other hand, the Tracts did not resemble the Avenir very closely. Dawson may be nearer the truth when he says that Froude hoped to make the British Magazine into a sort of Avenir." (p. 97 f.) -- "In France Louis de Villefosse has derided those who have treated Lamennais as the precursor of Bidault and Adenauer. He has preferred to regard him less as a reformer than as a revolutionary, the first Christian revolutionary. This view was also taken in England by G. D. H. Cole. He wrote enthusiastically of Lamennais's role in preparing for the socialist revolution. He placed less emphasis upon Lamennais's foreshadowing of modern Trade Unionism and co-operation (in which Lamennais was by no means alone) than upon the revolutionary nature of his teaching. In this way he diminished the difference between Lamennais and Marx. 'Lamennais', he claimed, 'influenced Marx a good deal more than Marx himself realised.'."
