It includes a fascinating historical perspective; an in-depth discussion of the phenomenology, outcomes, and assessment of BPD; the latest findings in neurobiology and genetics; the various treatment options available; and an important perspective from families living with children and adolescents who have BPD. The amount of research in child and adolescent BPD has been increasing at an impressive pace. We are fortunate that many of the leaders in the field are able to contribute their expertise to this edition. Although it is no longer debated that BPD can occur in children and adolescents, many questions remain about the boundaries of the disorder, the neurobiologic underpinnings, and the optimal treatments, to name a few. We hope that this issue provides clinicians with an easily accessible and integrated source of the latest information available that may improve patient outcomes and prompt new research hypotheses. [.] According to Dr. Wozniak and colleagues, part of the controversy surrounding the diagnosis of BPD in youth is the concern that children given the diagnosis may be subjected to treatments fraught with potentially impairing and serious side effects. Increasingly, clinicians, researchers, and patients and their families are turning to an array of natural products considered complementary and alternative treatments. These investigators review some of the alternative agents that have the potential to be the most useful in the treatment of pediatric BPD. This issue finishes with the perspective of Susan Resko, the Executive Director of the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation, who helps to connect parents of children who have BPD using the Internet. She describes the struggles that many families with children diagnosed with BPD go through and offers resources, connection, and hope to families and teens who are struggling, often in isolation, with mood disorders.
