Condition: Good. 9.75 x 7.75 in., Hardbound, 46 pages, 38 color illustrations. New condition.Nothing and Everything, is a hardcover catalog that accompanies an exhibition of thirty-eight drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculpture spanning eleven decades. The book and exhibition includes works by Carl Andre, Vija Celmins, Jean Dubuffet, Walker Evans, Robert Gober, Peter Hujar, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, Helen Levitt, Piero Manzoni, Agnes Martin, Robert Rauschenberg, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, among others.Nothing and Everything, investigates one of art's oldest mysteries: how an artwork may simultaneously contain elements of emptiness and fullness, void and profusion. These qualities may appear contradictory but they do not have to be so. Several works, including Peter Hujar's 1975 photograph of the Hudson River and Ellsworth Kelly's drawing Light Reflecting on Water (1950), explore connections between the banal and the sublime, particularly in nature. Diane Arbus's photograph Clouds on-screen at a drive-in movie, N.J. (1960), for example, blurs the line between the mundane and the transcendent with its image of a billowing cloud on the movie screen against the evening sky. More than a statement of modern man's distance from nature, the photograph captures a moment of the sublime bounded by the everyday.Nothing and Everything was organized in collaboration with Peter Freeman, Inc., New York.

First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 11 pages. Published in 1999. Landmark Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Stephen Daiter Gallery: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover, as issued. Photographs by Peter Hujar. Preface/Remembrance by Nan Goldin, which appears in this edition only. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago from March 19 through April 23, 1999. Presents "Peter Hujar: Intimate Survey". A selection of some of the photographer's most beautiful portraits, which showcase the deceptive simplicity and subtlety of his work. Some of them appear in published form for the very first time. His male nudes, in particular, have become posthumously celebrated for this reason. His photographs of animals have a rare empathy with their subject, drawing the viewer in and prompting Hujar's admirers to say that they are really either self-portraits (that he saw himself being as vulnerable as the animals) or a continuation of his erotic work (that he saw animals as sensual subjects). Includes a version of the still-controversial portrait, "Bruce de Saint Croix, 1976", which had not appeared in published form before, and is part of a ground-breaking triptych that Peter Hujar took of the model. An absolute "must-have" title for Peter Hujar collectors. This title is now collectible. It is a Catalog, and as such, is neither a full-fledged book nor a monograph. But it is a pioneering landmark publication for Hujar completists, is very beautifully produced, and comes with a Note from Nan Goldin that appears in this Catalog only. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare copy thus. 11 plates. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PETER HUJAR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). no.
