La formazion intellettuale e le tendenze conservatrici di Johan Huizinga - il grande storico olandese nato a Groninga nel 1872 - non gli impedirono di avvertire subito, fin dal 1933, il pericolo che il nazismo rappresentava per l'Europa e per la civiltà; e gli scritti dei suoi ultimi anni sono spesso ispirati da questa preoccupazione che gli dettava angosciosi interrogativi sulla «Crisi della civiltà» (1935; prima traduzione italiana; Einaudi, Torino 1937).
