"The Trinity Panels in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, are among the most splendid and important of early Netherlandish works of art, and have the added interest of being by far the most significant paintings to have survived the Scottish Reformation. Yet they have been strangely underestimated, both in Scotland and elsewhere. The present book is an attempt to reinstate the panels and to consider the light they shed on the work of Van der Goes as a whole. Colin Thompson is Keeper of the National Gallery of Scotland, where the panels are on extended loan from Her Majesty The Queen. Lorne Campbell is Speelman Fellow in Dutch and Flemish Art, Wolfson College, Cambridge . The central part of their study is a critical examination of the quality of the original paintings, their present state of preservation, and the documentary evidence concerning their history. Lorne Campbell examines the original setting of the panels and their purpose, the possible circumstances of their execution, and their dating. He also reviews the available evidence on the life and work of Van der Goes and makes a short survey of relations between Scotland and the Netherlands in the second half of the fifteenth century. Colin Thompson makes detailed comparisons of the style of the panels with that of the five other most important works by Van der Goes, and studies the artist's development as a designer, draughtsman, and colorist, and the evolution of his technique. New evidence is provided by a number of hitherto unpublished infrared detail photographs of the large-scale works of Van der Goes. Those of the Portinari altarpiece are of special interest since they support a suggestion advanced here that the two wings of the Portinari altarpiece were painted several years later than its center panel.
