Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Gordon Grant (illustrator). 1st Edition. One of a series of twelve of these little pocket books featuring the everyday adventures of an average American, John Henry. (And no, this one is not a "steel-driving man"! At least one listing on Amazon has got them hilariously mixed up.) These humorous books by Hugh McHugh (pseudonym of George V. Hobart) are known particularly for the language used. Whereas Wodehouse made use of the slang and idioms of the English upper-class, McHugh does the same for the American middle-class, and does it very well. There are six black & white plates by Gordon H. Grant. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Inscription on front endpaper, hinge is weak in one spot, tow or three of the plates are either detached or heading that way. Still a very good copy.
